Both my girls got phones when they turned 11, when they started middle school. They are allowed to bring phones to middle school.

Both of mine have phones and iPads but they don't have a phone number, just data service. I told them at 10 years old they could get a number

Yeah yeah yeah. How is that horse purchase I kept hearing about? Full of manure, you are.

I’m thinking about the time they get a drivers license.

I’d say 12 or so. That would be a just a cell phone not a smart phone. Maybe 16 for a smart phone.

at the same age you feel they no longer need to have a baby sitter to be left alone is the correct answer

16 or 17 when they had a job and were able to pay for it.

I laughed. Probably because I have an 18 month old who'll talk into anything roughly the size or shape of a phone.

They were 14, which was 8th grade for two of them, and early in 9th grade for the youngest.

I would think not giving him a phone would build character. Or something.

It was a matter of function as well. Moved to huge middle school and needed to have ability to communicate.

All these needs to communicate with kids that can't drive yet. I wonder how parents use to do it! Must have been just so so hard to communicate when practice was over and what time you'd pick them up.
