For the parents of young children, what age is everyone giving their kids a phone these days? What seems to be the best age?
this says to wait until 8th grade
Just not sure.

Mine was 4, but that's only because i needed a way to talk to him throughout the day while I was at work.

1.5 years old.
Doesn’t have service and has her favorite dolls as the background.
Had an old iPhone laying around and it keeps her from dropping and breaking ours.
Plus, I wanted to be that guy.

We gave him a phone to use when he was in 7th grade. That’s the age where he first had after school sports where he would need a ride home from us.

I got my first one at 14 in 2008 before high school. That seems about the right age maturty/need wise to get one still today. I know parents are handing them out earlier and earlier but when the time comes for me to have kids I'll need to see some hard evidence that my child needs it before I hand one out any earlier than that. And even then I may do everything in my power to limit it to just calls and texts until they hit high school.
That phone was a Verizon Voyager so only calls and texts but I got my ipod touch (wifi only) in 10th grade so thats when I actually had pocket access to the internet/social media/etc.... First actual smart phone halfway through senior year (iphone 4s).

We had one surgically implanted when my son was still in the womb.

I’d say it varies for every child. If I were a parent, I would wait until I had enough trust in them to make the right decisions and for them to have a full understanding of how everything they send will follow them for the rest of their life.

When they started driving...

Wait until you are comfortable with them sending nudes.

My 14 month old boy has an old Blackberry (the Torch I think, the last one they made, has the touch screen to try to battle the iPhone) from my law firm days. It doesn't work or even turn on, but he still thinks he's making deals

my child lives in the basement and is not allowed to have a phone or a computer.

Giving a kid a smart phone is child abuse.

My oldest is 7. Id say probably 12 or 13 since i have another kid. I think a kid can't watch a sibling until 12 or 13, so my kids will always be with us.
If they go to a friend's house, they are responsible for my kid and I'd know where they're at until old enough to have a cell.

My 10 yr old has an old one but it doesn't have service so it only works on wifi. She uses it to FaceTime her grandparents and plays games.

I gave my daughters a black desktop model from the mid-70s. But it was a rotary. Enjoyed playing with it but it's almost too heavy for them to move around. They like to bang on it and make the bell ring inside.

Absolutely no need for a phone until they start driving.
"But I need to call muh kid in case soccer practice ends early!"
bullshite.

7th grade, mainly cause oldest kid plays football and wanted/needed to be able to communicated, especially games since they had to ride the bus home. After that, only fair to do same for girls.
