My wife also has no desire to move while my daughter is in school. She moved a lot as a kid and hated it. My wife loves Louisiana and she's not even from here

Maybe if you are VERY shortsighted in your financial analysis.

I should have moved out of LA when I was younger. It just gets harder with age when you have kids in school, own a home, wife's career etc.

I can see that, but I also believe you're paying private school tuition?

Yep - almost 11k. I know the financial benefits of moving but it's basically a non starter with the wife right now.

I can see that. We didn't have kids till we moved to Houston. I certainly enjoyed my time in Louisiana as well. But with all the savings and for most the higher paying job will be in Houston and you have great schools.

If we leave LA, the Houston metro would be the logical destination. It's relatively close to BR which is where most of my family is and the cost of living is decent. There are only about 8-10 companies in BR that will pay me what I'm making now so if I ever lose my job we may end up there.

Too bad the ridiculous property taxes eat into that $100K

You can earn $500,000 a year in TX, live in a $750k house with good schools and pay $16,000 a year in property taxes with no income tax.

That's equivalent to a 3.2% income tax (with no property tax).

Curious what the property taxes in BTR would be on that $750K home. LA State income tax would be $19,690 on that $500K salary. In that case you come out ahead even if you paid nothing in property taxes in Baton Rouge and you have amazing schools to boot in Tx.

I just had to pay Alabama $6K in income tax because I flew in weekly to work there even though my permanent residence is in Texas, and my property taxes were half of that. It also depends on which county you live in on how much property taxes you pay. Tax rates in Chambers county east of Houston are much less than Harris county taxes.

skewed stats baw, don't factor in the what the local taxes are, similar to FL, they're going to get it one way or the other

I live in NW Harris County and rate is like 2.64% which is really good. Many pay around 3.2% or higher

If it were strictly a financial decision Houston makes sense but next time I move it won't be financial so I'm looking for change of scenery

I’m in Humble. 3.2 % is about right. It really depends on how much you vs. value of your home.

We moved to DFW in May of 2009 after my wife graduated (LSU Vet School) due to no real job market around Baton Rouge. I'm from Baton Rouge (born in 1978 at EKL Hospital) and it was a big change for me. Fortunately, my wife had relatives already living in the area so that made the transition easier. I miss our friends, but we have way better opportunities for us and our kids.

We are roughly the same age. The wife and I both have pretty established careers here. We make good money but we do pay for private school. We only have one kid and we can pretty easily afford it.

Honestly, my main motivation for leaving the state wouldn't be economic right now. I don't want my daughter to stay here after college. BR is slowly turning into Jackson, MS. People like SWB will only accelerate the decline. It's sad.

After seeing what EBR parish spends per child and what Cy-Fair ISD and Katy ISD spends per child with fantastic schools its mind boggling the amount of corruption in the EBR parish school system.

EBR spends $10,755.00 per student
Zachary $9,780.00 per student

Katy ISD $8,596.00 per student.
Cy_Fair spends $7,967.00 per student.

I can tell you that Cy-Fair is building 4-5 new schools every year and constantly upgrading. I've been told even better than Louisiana private schools.

Starting teacher salary in Cy-Fair ISD is $53K with BS. EBR $44,500.00 with a BA degree,$48,400.00 with a PHD.

One has to wonder what EBR is spending their money on.

No sales tax in OR. I live in Wa, where there is no state income tax but high property tax. Money for state and local governments has to come from somewhere. An analysis of all taxes would be more useful.
