I'd pay twice as much in property taxes for better teacher salaries as long as they hired at least 50% men. All of these sorostitutes thar are educating our kids are ruining society. Our kids need real role models in the classroom.

Sorry JERK, WE don't get 3 months vacation as you erroneously think. Idiots like you are the reason students don't respect the educational system. We have to work 2 more weeks getting grades in and Staightening ou room for next year.We have to attend conferences and workshops. Some even have to take College courses for further certifications. And we go back 2 weeks before the students. The worst part about teaching now is dealing with disrespectful brats and their entitled rude parents. Yeah, that's why no one wants to teach anymore.

What you’re saying is correct, but I wouldn’t relate it as directly with NCLB as you do. It’s a combination of that and several other things, but the point that teachers have no power to effectively discipline students anymore is absolutely correct.
My daughter (no pics) left teaching after 3 years to go back to school to be a PT. She's almost finished with her DPT degree and knows she made the right decision. She left because of the lack of discipline. She taught 2nd grade and kids basically had no disciplinary action for almost anything they did. Their punishment was sitting in the office and getting computer time instead of class. She felt she was babysitting kids with no consequences.
Additionally, the burden of the district's requirements (Cy Fair in Houston) was so much that there was no way to do all the things as well as she thought they should be done. There was no leeway in how they taught various lessons or how long they could stay on a topic. She taught math/science and if she thought they needed an extra day on a particular math concept, she couldn't use professional judgement and do it that way.
The teacher job that exists today is a horrible job for those that value excellence and truly want to see kids succeed. Instead, it's perfect for those that can be ok with doing all the things just well enough so that they don't work 12 hour + days all the time. She felt like she could never do enough to keep the district and the parents happy and also teach the kids.
And how Covid impacted the kids is a whole 'nother thing. Some of the kids will never recover from their lost year of instruction.

I don't think I could deal with the bullshite for anything less than 180k. The fact that teachers do it for 1/3 of that, or probably less, is wild.
It's a part time job, that for the vast overwhelming majority of them is an easy gig. If it were hard, women wouldn't do it and as far as public servants go and their worth to society. School teachers are down there with cops.

First grade teacher. She is at school working from 7:30am until 5pm and then grades papers, etc for about 2 hours a night. So my math was wrong, only 57.5 hours per week. She also has to do 30-40 hrs of training seminars per year and various other BS the state (Texas) requires. Most people don't realize all the extra training/continuing education they are required to complete every year.
This was my daughter's (no pics) exact experience. She got to school at 6:45, got home around 5 and then spent a couple of hours at home grading, lesson plans, etc. They also barely have enough time to eat their lunch and have meetings during their planning time. So much state and district BS. When I was a kid, nobody was telling my teachers how to teach. They had the book and they decided what worked for them and their class. Teachers are all different and have different styles. Kids are all different. They are no longer treated like professionals who can make decent decisions in their class. NCLB ended that.

If I didn't have any other job prospects I would be an upper level history teacher at a private school for 100k.

Definitely would like more but ive gotten to the point where my workload outside of cross country season really isnt that bad so i cant complain. The kids are assholes but i just dont take it personal.

I took a pay cut after being a teacher and coach in MS public schools for 12 years to move into coaching at the NAIA level. The pay cut was minor and the time flexibility was more than worth the $10k/year.

I don’t think it’s possible to stitch it back together at this point.

I wouldn't do it for what they make but not because its hard or demanding, cause it ain't, but because I can make a pile more doing what I do. Its an easy job though.....they will get fighting mad if you don't pretend like they are doing the work of a soldier, a fireman and brain surgeon all rolled into one but the fact is most of them are unemployable in the private sector and they have a HEAP of paid leave and. based on the needed quals, a damned good salary.

90% Caucasian school in a small town.
Regardless of the size of the town, your life is going to be made miserable by 20% of the parents of those white kids.
I might take my chances with a few instances of random inner city gun play over 9 months of a half dozen white women freaking the hell out because their little darlings cant possibly be the spoiled lazy fricks I keep saying they are.

About 50k. Which is what they make now. Take their 180 days of work at only 6 hours, and it comes out to around $36 an hour.
Pretty damn good to have every federal holiday, 3 months off for summer, and the best retirement in the state and free insurance. Better than about 80% of the jobs this state offers.
Um, I'm a public school teacher who coaches 2 sports and with nearly 20 years experience it costs me $1000/month for my insurance. I also will have to get a second job after retirement because unlike you I don't get the benefit of social security. I will only be able to get about 60% of my highest 3 year average salary, which will likely be under $4K a month (and thats with a masters degree). So, before you speak out of your arse, maybe aske someone who knows better first

In today's world? No amount. Teaching today's parents and kids is a nightmare.

Poster number four or so in this thread who can do exactly what Elon suggested people pulling ads from X can do.
Two questions: How much experience do you have teaching in public schools, and what do you do to make piles more money than teachers?

I work with a former teacher/football coach that does sales for us now and is making $200k plus a year now. I'd put my number right around that.
