How much of what we purchase is driven by acceptance/image/approval?

Whether it’s the clothes people wear, vehicles they drive, vacation destinations, places we shop, brands we purchase, places we go to eat, things we do, etc, exactly how much of it is driven by being accepted by others, receiving the approval of those we want the approval of, fitting in so you don’t stick out too much as being different from the herd, of fitting into an image we want to convey to everyone which is somehow synonymous with who we want to be seen as?
I watch a significant amount of reviews for products, and something that strikes me is how much of it, if not the first things that comes up is “who is this for”? IOW, what “BOX” does this fit in, because it would seem that if we can’t put something in a box, or a person in a box, then it scares us. It’s kind of a strange phenomenon when I think about how life drives people to their box and people go there without hesitation because we are so driven by what others might think of us.
If we are all being honest here, how much does this influence our own decisions in life? It’s not meant to be derogatory or anything, as we are all just humans in a system, but more of a reflection on how much that system influences our decisions in our daily lives.

This is pretty much the definition of human nature

Absolutely.
Look at people who are ok with $1200/month truck notes
And my favorite is the 30A folks

Social media has ruined us.
We all worry about what others are doing and compare to that.

I’d agree to a point, but I suppose it’s the degree to which we are driven by it, and are we really our own, or do we eventually become walking billboards for corporations and the like?

I am a follower of Popeye - "I yam what I yam"
Could care less unless I am outside working and get a little ripe and may not notice till others let me know. Then it is time for "Mr Bubble" and "Rubber Ducky".

Everyone in my neighborhood thinks the $10,000 souped up golf carts are a need to be able to go to the pool a block away.

You can damn near go to Europe on what you pay for a week on 30A

What is ironic about that to me is that a ton of people will spend their entire life almost exclusively vacationing 30A, and miss out on the absolutely spectacular vistas and destinations most people in the world travel to America to see in our ridiculous wealth of national parks. It is THE top destinations for world travelers to the states, and yet probably most in this country will live their entire lives without ever visiting them.
Don’t get me wrong. They are really nice beaches, but at some point, you would think that there has to be something else, but for many, it’s all they want.

I’m not at all complaining. They’re just observations, and they aren’t wrong. It’s true.

Couldn’t agree more.

I don’t know, but as a watch enthusiast (and I suppose collector to an extent at this point), I look forward to the mechanical watch market hopefully cooling off soon.
It’s bonkers how the hype machine / flex culture has impacted the market for stainless steel sports watches.

You're just jealous you don't have one to load your cooler full of bud light into before you head to neighborhood lemon party.

I shop for groceries at a salvage store.
99% of the clothes I buy are on sale/clearance.
My vehicle was purchased because of dependability and resale value.
I live in an 1100 sq. ft. brick home built in 1980.
I rarely vacation. When I do, the destination is chosen with the kids and grandkids at the forefront.

And that doesn’t bother me at all. See how it works?
