Mall of America is no more
LINK

Esplanade Mall in Kenner is no more.

Clearview Mall in Metairie is barely open.

I'm surprised Lakeside Mall in Metairie is thriving.

I give that place maybe 5 years.

I know the mall is everything this website hates but it will certainly be there in 5 years

Dicks and the other anchor stores stay busy. People here make it seem like there’s tumbleweeds rolling around in the parking lot

Got to be a couple grand a month, right?

It obviously depends on the size of the store. I would be surprised if the smaller stores rented for less than $20K per month. When my son was in college 10 years ago, the restaurant he worked at was in a strip mall and the manager told him it was $25K a month rent.

What ever happened to Morrison’s Cafeteria? El Chico? All the restaurants that were in malls that weren’t connected to the food court.

That is because Lakeside is not a mall. It’s a shopping center.

Are malls making a comeback?

quote:

As Gen Alpha searches for IRL, offline experiences, mall owners are encouraging young people to come back, hang out and shop till they drop.

Despite growing up with iPads in their strollers, these kids — born from around 2010 on — are so over-pixelated that they crave in-person social interactions. That’s why malls are now stepping up and providing their youngest shoppers with stores and experiences that do just that.

“Malls are making a comeback and it’s a younger audience that is doing it,” said R.J. Hottovy of Placer.ai, which tracks visits. “It’s a third place that is away from home and office, and instead of just shopping, it is becoming a place for experiences — and hanging out.”

quote:

“They are being engaged online on social media and then want this very high touch experience that is happening in real time in a physical space,” Ottensoser said of both Gen Z and Gen Alpha. “They are learning about that J.Crew cream sweater, and then are coming into our center, shopping in J.Crew, shopping elsewhere, and hanging out with friends. And really using it as a third space.”

quote:

“They know what they want, learn about it online and then come to shop in person for their experience,” Ottensoser said of the kids.

To keep shoppers in malls longer, Related is creating programming, activations and experiences — including performances by Broadway stars — that are highly engaging. “Come hang out, get Starbucks, go shopping,” said Ottensoser. “It’s working.”

Not sure about a mall but several years ago tried my hand at opening a retail store in a high end shopping center. Base rent was $15/ sf. Real rent was 6% of sales if over the $15/ sf. The thing about it was if you were paying the minimum $15/sf you were not going to make it. So the correct answer is some percentage of sales above 6%.

I did not finish my three year lease. Lucky for me someone took over the spot two months later with a different concept.

I had to go for last minute bday shopping last week and I couldn’t get out of there fast enough.

Bon Marche vibes.

Same here. I've gone since and it was the same busy place. Bring back 10 o'clock closing!. Never had salespeople say shite to me when I'm walking in either. They got rid of the annoying skin care hustlers or they moved into a store a long time ago.

Would it kill them to put a fountain or two inside or maybe another arcade/bookstore.

Dillards and Macy’s may not last but they’ll be there longer than most.

Those are anchor stores so they get talked into hanging around. When one of those dies the rest follow pretty quick.

Tragic story indeed but that Tru Bleeda rapper and his boys hanging out of a car after getting lit up back in ‘22 at 1 pm in the afternoon showed me where the mall was heading. Imagine eating a decent meal at J Alexander’s and seeing that from a window table.

Story of the ‘22 murder outside of mall

And then soon someone shot and killed the poon who shot and killed them. Doesn’t matter. Bluebonnet mall area in the middle of a week day is too close for anyone.

I remember the democrats telling us that white supremacy was the reason this shooting happened. Good times indeed and more good times ahead. Little did we know it would only get worse.
