In alabama you don't really make alot welding. I am contracted out through Norfolk southern. It really don't matter what a bunch of people on the internet think. I can make hella overtime. So it's not that bad. If I did this job in cali I'd be making 40 + an hour cause I do an awesome job.

Look into NDE and inspection field. Endless opportunities and easy to get into. Go take a 40 hour radiation safety class and then start applying to companies. Eventually you can go take your API and be an inspector. The sky is the limit from there. Better money and better career than a welder.

Tell me more. What is NDE?

Welding is a tough job which is why there are so few of them .

PTECH degree = Job = eventual 6 figures yearly. And I promise you won't work as hard as a welder

If you go the welder route training don't neglect any fitting skills and get sharp on your math skills. My company is always looking for good fitter/welders. ALso pay close attention when they teach how to set a machine up for a type of metal, our manager in the fab shop goes bat shite crazy when they have a machine set wrong. If I was in your position wanting to pay for a trade school, I would go into machinist. The young good ones are all in their 40s.

It not unusual for one of my guy's to have 40 regular and 30-50 OT per week.

This is a fact. To make real money they have to work overtime. That is why you go to college people. I would never want to work 80-100 hours in a single week. I would literally be spending zero time with my friends and family.

Many degrees aren't going to protect you from working mega hours a week. You'll just be salary and not make any more money.

This. Plus when you factor in your 401K, insurance, vacation pkg ops is much more attractive. Since the OP already has a BS he could move up within the company if he wanted out of ops.

There are a shite load of guys that love that. Are you kidding me? Of course it's not all the time, but they love going to a 4-6 week or longer job and work 12 hours a day with every 13th day off. Do the math. It's damn good pay for those who are good at what they do and motivated.

You can also make 6 figures with benefits doing white collar work 5 days a week. I understand the desire to make more money, but if you enjoy working 12 hour days 6 days a week you either have nothing to go home to or you hate whatever (or whoever) is there.

Money is nice but if you don't have time to enjoy it, it's not worth much.

Yeah I'm one of those white collar guys making good money.
The point is, not everyone is college material. I see a lot of guys who are going to college racking up a ton of debt and then getting degrees that aren't doing much for them.

I applaud these guys who want to learn a skill and work hard.

It's a thread about welder pay, so I was just adding some insight.

That is true also. I truly can't imagine having to work 80-100 hours in a week. It's been a long time since I've had to put in 40 hours.

Depends on skill level and what you're welding on.

Pipeline Welders and underwater welders make damn good money
