To OP - if in BR, make sure it's the water portion that's jacked up, as you asked about sewage. Sewage is (or used to be) based on a yearly average of water usage, but they can/will throw out a random month of high water usage ... like if you filled a swimming pool in March ... to fix an out of whack average. Sewage stays pretty constant, but does get adjusted from time to time based on average water usage.

If it's your water portion that is high, it may not be what you consider "a leak", but could just be a running toilet. You'd be surprised (shocked) to see how much water can flow thru those things.

When I moved into this house 16 years ago it was $18 a month and if you paid yearly you got 1 month free. Now its $25 a month.

We have about 100 houses on a community sewage system.

My sewage recently went way up and I called to ask what happened. Turns out that we had a few high water bills because of running our sprinkler system more than we realized. They base your sewage price on water usage. So when that goes up the sewer follows. They told me I could call back in 3 months and request them to re-average and it would go back down.

In BR water, sewage and trash are all on one bill. Looks like my sewage was $61. Damn, that is higher than I thought.
In BR they don't read monthly. They'll come out once or twice a year and adjust your "average" usage.

We had a guest bathroom toilet that was running non-stop without us noticing. Our bill went through the roof. We fixed the toilet, but the bill stayed the same. It took an act of Congress to get them to come out and do an updated reading. Had to show them the repair receipt and previous bills.

Thanks everyone! We did what fish recommended and traced it to the toilet in the guesthouse that we keep off. No idea how it got turned on but I’m glad it wasn’t a more expensive fix!

I got mine for free. It was delivered in a paper bag and was left right on my front door step. Somehow it caught fire though. I think Fido had a hand in it.

Had a family member in rural neighborhood, maybe 30 lots on a private/non-public system, paid like $15/month for years which he found out barely covered the operating/maintenance costs and put no money in escrow for the future.

At some point the system failed, option to connect to public sewer was about a $15,000/lot one-time assessment or a newer private system was about a $10,000/lot one-time assessment, plus increased monthly fees. Kicker is if they would have paid $40/month (instead of $15) over the years they would have had enough money in escrow to bond out a new private system with no new assessment.

Summary: look at sewer/septic cost/condition before buying in an area with public sewer.

Live in New Orleans, send them $100 each month.

Now my bills range from $0-$280 each month, because the Sewage & Water Board have no fricking what they are doing. Once every 4 months or so they do an actual meter reading instead of an estimate, so it brings it somewhat in line. Sometimes I'll get a $200 bill, then there are times won't get a bill for 3 months.
