This may be a question for the money board, but was at a wedding this weekend and there was a group of people there all approaching 40 who expect to make partner at a Big 4 in the next few years. I asked and they just informed me...’alot’. How much we talking here?

They must all be shite hot because partnership track at such firms is generally 15-20 years.

Start out of school at 22

Approaching 40 is lets say 38 years old. So they are at 16 years

Depends on the service line and market primarily. $500K is a reasonable figure for audit/tax but generally goes up in the consulting lines of business (be also more volatile book of business).

Depends on the business line, how much work you are selling, leadership roles, negotiation on front end for really specialized people.

Basic audit partners probably make the least, especially early in their tenure. They all like to complain the make less in their first years as partner than when they were senior managers (neglecting to mention it’s because they are paying off their share of the partnership)

Bigger question how much do they have to borrow to buy in

Think that first year of partner is worse than being a director

This is interesting...so you have to ‘buy in’ to be a partner at a publicly traded company? How many partners are there at a Big 4 in New Orleans or Houston?

IMO, probably not enough to justify the awful hours and year round stress they have to endure.

ETA: pretty sure you can be an equity or income partner. Don’t think the latter requires a buy-in, basically just a positional change/promotion.

So you asked a group of people at a party how much money they make?? Wow, that's incredibly inappropriate.

Are you including deferred compensation as well? If so then can be $1-3 M depending on the partner

They're not publicly traded.

You have to buy in to be a partner in almost every business, regardless of whether it’s publicly traded or not.

No. I didn’t ask them. I know what I said. Generally on this board when you ask a money question though the replies are...why didn’t you just ask...so I said I did on here. Regardless appreciate the responses.

Did you intend this to be a response to me?
