How much did taxes play in where you live?

I mean overall state, county (parish), and local. I know back in Louisiana I was making 40K but moved to Washington and in King County I nearly doubled my income. Even though rentals were a good $400-$600 more a month vs the North Shore, not having a grocery tax or income tax really did good for me. Now living in Whatcom County, I don't have to pay that ridiculous Sound Transit corruption tax which every year saves me over $300 for my registration/tabs. But I know almost every local and state government in the country is going to drastically increasing taxes mainly for infrastructure which is going to be a significant issue hurting the economy for decades to come. I would like to live closer to work in either Bellingham or Ferndale, but the thought of even building a cottage style home under 1,000 sq ft and having to pay over $70,000 in impact fees before the first bit of dirt is turned is a huge NO for me. County life is apparently the way to go.

The best places have high taxes. You get what you pay for.

A lot, but unlike when I lived in Louisiana, I can at least see a tangible result coming from my tax dollars (ok well not MY tax dollars specifically, but mine in aggregate with everyone else's)

California. Too fricking much.

9.3% income tax, highest gas tax in the nation, sales tax

My favorite is that they are taxing people who can't afford health insurance, in order to pay for illegals health insurance.

My state is fricking retarded. frick this government. frick Newsom and the democrat supermajority.

Not always

Utah, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Arizona, Nevada, etc are all high on state ranking lists and have low taxes

So what exactly am I getting in return for the high income tax and gas taxes I pay?

My suspension is having issues right now because of all the damn potholes and shitty roads here in San Diego.

I paid no income taxes in Texas and for some reason I do not see the difference in what I got in return compared to California.

North Alabama and taxes are cheap, home prices are low, and quality of life is exceptional!

Here in Washington, once you get out of Seattle metro (including Bellevue and Tacoma) and Bellingham...the rest of the state is surprisingly conservative...like really conservative. I am flat out amazed at the taxes Seattle people pay. At my co-workers bbq the other weekend, his sister told me how she pays $136 a month for water/sewer in Snohomish, WA.. a rural town 40 mins NNE of Seattle. And then in Ferndale, they also charge you a storm water tax.

I live in Austin so obviously not much since housing and property taxes are out of control.

However, with that said, I will never retire here because of that. Cost of living on a fixed budget wouldn’t be worth it.

People rave about FL having no income tax but they get you in other ways.

It’s one of the big reasons I live in Jeff Parish instead of Orleans Parish.

What do high taxes provide me here in ca?

My roads suck, the k-12 education system is crappy, homeless and drug addict problems go unaddressed. Housing costs are crippling. Daycare costs are crippling.

Does your job only exist in CA? If not, why don't you move?

They do but it is more a consumption tax; higher property, gas, tobacco, alcohol, etc. tax

To the OP, I pay 6% state, 2.2% local, 1ish% property, and 6% sales, 0 on grocery

I pay $11k a year in property taxes a year in southlake, TX. Worth every penny for the schools.
I finally get to send my oldest to school to reap the benefits. No state income tax in TX. Will not say federal taxes but it is too much

Moved to where I am now and the wife and I have doubled our income along with no state income taxes. The property tax is about the same but the sales tax is 3% higher here but we are coming out way ahead in every category.

How?

No income tax, low sales tax (7% here and groceries are not taxed), low gas tax, mid-low property taxes.

Other things are low around here also like car insurance, mid-low homeowners insurance, low govt fees (tags, DL etc).

FL isn't perfect but they have a lot going right.
