5 times in my 45 years on this plane of existence. the last time was a few weeks ago. he has late stage dementia, and is very difficult with my mom, who is his primary care giver, but she had to have a heart cath procedure. he cried from worry. was very surreal for me to be the one to talk to him and calm him down, when he always did that for me.

getting old sucks - but Dementia is far worse.

The last time I saw my granddad before we put him in a home. It was like he knew!
When my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer he cried on my shoulder privately. Nobody else saw it.
I cried at both of their funerals. I spoke at dad’s. Made it thru the speaking part.

granddad - NEVER

dad - twice

1st time was our next door neighbor died of cancer..he was a little bald-headed cigar-smoking jew who came over almost every night to shoot pool and argue with my dad. i remember clearly the time he lit up a cigar after our 2 families went out to eat and my dad wasn't having him get in the car smelling of cigar and we ended up leaving him to get a taxi home. the only close friend my dad ever had and when my dad went to bring food to his house after he died he passed by an open window (i was inside the house) and he didn't think anyone could hear him and he broke down sobbing. worst sound i've ever heard and when he came back 5 minutes later he was as stoic as ever.

2nd was after i graduated college and working in houston my parents came to visit and i had arranged a limousine, a zach morrison cell call from my brother who was living across the country, chef's table for dinner and a dessert that said 'thank you for everything you did for us' and he broke down at the table. wasn't expecting that. i just wanted to let him know my sorry spoiled arse appreciated all the money he wasted on me growing up.

Two times. My dad is and has always been the strong, irrational type. Great guy but has serious irrational anger issues. When I was about 14, he had accused my mom of cheating on him and this carried over for a few years.

One day they were arguing about that situation again, so I excused myself to go take a shite. As I was on the shitter, he barges in with tears in his eyes saying that he had to leave and that he loved me. He left, and they would get a divorce soon after. Years later they would get remarried.

The second time my dad was going through his cancer battle. He came to visit me in Louisiana and was telling me his plans for when he dies. I get his truck, my brother gets his car, etc, etc. I was kinda drunk and came clean to him.

My dad used to beat the breaks on me as a kid. He was very hard on me, I was a shite kid so I deserved most of it. After every beating I used to pray to god that he'd kill my dad. And now that he was probably about to go, I'm praying for him to stay.

It got quiet and he started to cry. He apologized for being so hard on me, but it took me becoming an adult to see why he was so hard on me.

My grandpa was cold blooded until Alzheimer’s - after that a kitten purring could set him off.

My dad is an emotional Italian, so he'll cry whenever he sees a good sunset or hears "That's My Job". However, my grandpa is one of those hardass Italian steelworkers that never shed a tear. Unfortunately, he had a stroke about 7 years ago and I have seen him cry more between now and then than I ever had before, definitely took some getting used to, but I know the majority of it is from frustration and the stroke.
