I know just the spot if those dumb bastards in Montgomery ever push for legalization. The small rolling hills in Elkmont right next to the Tennessee River could sustain some 20ft+ sativas with the right care.

State Higher Ed until 29 (Public Sector, obviously)

Startup in Education 30-32

Enterprise Software 32-Present (36) - Yeah I sold out.

I enjoy the startup game (even though we aren't technically a startup anymore), and am doing quite well. I work a lot though. I enjoy the work so it isn't too bad.

You can buy a 70’s style ranch in 40 year old neighborhoods like Jefferson Terrace and Tara that will last decades longer than anything dsld or dr Horton will build. They don’t make them like they use too.

That's exactly what we did about 5 years ago

Dude. How do you do that shite? Being a nurse seems awful enough to me, but ER work just seems traumatic. You have both my respect and my bewilderment.

At times it's not easy, but I'm good at what I do. My motto is to help those that can't help themselves. I could tell some stories. Not a glamorous job, but when the shite hits the fan I stay calm, even keeled, and focused when someone's life is in my hands.

Think Pluralsight/Skilljar/etc., but more focused on actual college credits.

I went from logistics to software and back to logistics in 6 months.

After going back to a new company things have never been better.

Interesting. Alternatives to traditional schooling are definitely en vogue, and pretty damn needed if they aren't money grabs.

You must have had the worst sales job ever. Or you just sucked at sales

I was in medical device sales. Travelled a lot, conference calls every Monday, boss work with every 6 weeks, etc. I was #2 in sales for my company. Worked 11 years total in sales. Do I regret it?? frick NO.

Dealing with the same thing here in LA, we just got approved for medicinal though. Baby steps, to much money to be made. Give it 5 years.

I really liked the goal, which was to lower the cost of education via productized early college credit, but like some startups it was a mess. Good goals, and they still exist, but not my type of org. I built them 60+ articulation agreements with colleges, so I did my work over 2.5 years.

I moved to a fast growing education software company and couldn't be happier. And, compensation wise, it's tough to beat where I am now.

That sounds awesome, man. Not to demean what you did while you were an educator, but I think you're doing more to help folks in that role than as a teacher.

Does Audit to Accounting count?

Most people go into audit to use it as a stepping stone to an accounting role. So no. Not really

Thanks Believe it or not, I still teach from time to time, so I like to keep in touch with the market directly. But my responsibilities here have escalated quickly, so I'm not sure when I'll teach again.

That isn't demeaning at all, there are different levels, the goal is to use the skills you have to make an impact. There are way better teachers than I, that i have no doubt, but my current skill lines up with helping institutions understand change for the better via technology. And I'm perfectly comfortable with that. It's a different sort of impact for sure, but still an impact.

And you never moved up to manager?

Yeah, you just sucked. I don’t blame you. I would have quit too.

Owned a wholesale operation for ten years that required me to work 7 days a week. Good income, but had kids, and realized a change was in order. Made a career change into real estate, and things went real smooth for several years. Enjoyed raising a family and being involved with my kids.

Now the market has turned. Considering changing careers again.

Sucks having a family that depends on my income, but that's the breaks.

Worked and managed kitchens for almost 20 years.

Had to make a change. So I took a job making $8 an hour in an entirely new field to learn about it.

Make more now, but am patiently taking my own clients and hope to soon have my own company.

I do not regret my decision.
