this thread is depressing

im a moderate who leans right. ive dated a moderate who leans left for a looooong time. we dont agree on everything and i ultimately think thats a good thing. i have definitely noticed a difference in my stances since we started dating and ive noticed a difference in hers as well. we are open to other opinions and see things from their point of view and i think that is a good thing

In theory I probably could, within reason. I mean, someone can have a justifiable but different view on things like taxes, abortion, gun control, etc. (within reason, I'm not talking about gun grabbers or abortion-firsters) and I could conceivably date them. It would take the right person and even then it still might not work, but not impossible.

But in reality, hitting the right combination would be hard, and more pervasively, having different political views comes with all sorts of other baggage.

People on the solid left are less likely to appreciate -

- American exceptionalism/significance of Western culture
- orthodox/creedal Christianity (small o)
- frank and truthful discourse about sensitive issues
- the significance of the nuclear family
etc.

Those are things pretty central to my worldview/life that aren't necessarily exclusive to being conservative/republican, but which are in short supply or are often uncomfortably positioned on the left.

Because not everybody aligns politics with values or has a hard time accepting differing views without judging them harshly.

My wife is fairly similar to me, but I have friends all over the spectrum. The question is being reasonable and respectful of the opinion of others.

People talk about sky screamers on the left, but they're there on the right too. The common denominator with people I get along with is that we can hold a reasonable discussion about our differences without one side calling the other a Nazi or baby killer.

Dated one in college who has for years testified in front of Congressional Committees from a very Liberal point of view. She’s out there way left of center and very vocal. Written books, met privately with SOtH etc.

I ended it. Couldn’t have a date without it getting charged.

Well, people with extreme views aren't well matched. They seem to be the most vocal too. Moderates usually aren't in Ths category.

It all comes down to how important those individual views are to a person.

i don't find views on things like tax rates, healthcare, or environmental policy to mean all that much

people can have similar values and be on opposite sides of the aisle
