When did the 10% rule start? I bet they were not giving 40% of their money to the govt who in turn supports the poor through food stamps, housing, unemployment, medicaid, etc.
I do both and know many that do same.
Exactly how do you think both institutions stay in business?

Gotta get Pastor Jesse his new 65,000 Sq. Ft. roof
Check around here. Lots of churches but only Jimmy S. has a compound.
Check your facts before criticizing.
I did.

Imagine expecting your supporters should give you 10% of their hard earned income...just because...year after year...
It isnt a requirement. You are free to go to church and not tithe at all.
I normally give 15%, 10 for Jesus and 1% for every inch i gave ur mom last night

Once year I take 10% of our income out of the bank, in cash, and we toss it up in the air. God can keep whatever he can catch.

My ex wife and her brother attended catholic schools their entire life. Her dad paid their tuition in full every year and also gave probably 20% to the church. The school and that church were tied together. Also volunteered every chance he got. I think it was around when my ex was in 6th grade, he got laid off and obviously had to cut back on giving to the church and had asked for tuition assistance to keep his kids at that school. Denied. He asked for a delayed payment(promissory note) of some sort. Denied. He ended up borrowing from his parents to pay tuition.
I believe he still gives 20% and volunteers his time to that same church.

A fool and his money are soon parted. Even after proof the building fund is more important than hardship tuition.

Charity yes. Church - $0 I’m Catholic and not giving the church any money to pay off their lawsuits for molesting children.

Imagine not knowing the Bible and that giving 10% was a Jewish law. The new testament says to give from the heart.
Thats not what it means. It means that anything over 10% is to be from the heart. You're basically saying you're a new testament Christian and that the Old Testament doesn't apply to you.

My pastor put it this way.. it should be gross because god deserves my money before the government does.

How does that work? Just not pay taxes? What if I go to jail for tax evasion? I'll lose my job and then how am I supposed to tithe with no income?

The problem I have is when elderly people who live on social security/fixed incomes still fork over hundreds of dollars a month to the church when they should be keeping it to survive. The church is all about guilting people into doing things that go against common sense and their own well being. Oh but it’s all about getting to that heavenly the after life right?

“the church” doesn’t do this, some churches may, never been to one that did.

My parents tithed 10% from their pre-tax earnings my whole life. We attended ‘small town’ Baptist church in southern Oklahoma.. We were solidly middle class, not rich but had a nice home and cars.
I remember times the church would come to my dad asking for more when they needed it. Kinda pissed me off, knowing the church was full of wealthy retirees, drs and lawyers…but they always had their hands out knowing dad would come through, for the Lord and all that.
Why be pissed? Who will be the one to judge your father? God alone will, and he will do so by looking into our hearts. Your dad as described sounds like he gave for the right reasons, because in his heart he knew he could and intended for it to be used to further the Lord's message.
If funds are misused, it should absolutely be addressed and people held accountable. However, if this is a concern it would probably be best to find a church you could trust to use funds more responsibly.
I tithe around 10%, but not all of it goes directly into the plate each Sunday (Catholic). I give monthly to a couple organizations, but also to different fund raisers in my local parishes. I give back because I am fully capable of doing so. No way on judgement day could I sit in front of the Lord and justify all the wasteful spending, while giving so little. As I type this I think I need to find more charities in my area to give to.
