In 1977 a sporting goods store in West Monroe had a "Four Sheets To the Wind" run between Thanksgiving, and Christmas, sponsored by a then brand new beer called Natural Light. You were supposed to get a can of beer when you crossed the finish line. It was nearly freezing that day, with sleet, so there was a light turnout. They gave everyone a six pack, and still had a bunch left over.
The sporting goods store was on Trenton street just North of the Lea Joyner Bridge. The race ran south on Trenton, over the levee, and back. I remember being happy to finish the four mile run in under 29 minutes, thanks to some guy wearing a watch. I remember being happy with 35 minutes for the 10 K's.
