In some instances out of state tuition is cheaper. I had a roommate from Michigan who said his tuition at MSU was cheaper than anything in his home state.

My son didn't want to go to LSU or USL (we lived in Lafayette then) - he got a partial scholarship to Baylor. We chipped in the rest.

Look up Academic Common Market. Seriously, you can find incredible deals at out of state schools and pay in-state prices depending on the degree.

My daughter wanted to go to USM after going to a leadership camp there the summer after freshman year of HS. We knew she would probably be a TOPS recipient at LSU, so we told her she needed scholarships to go out of state.

She got enough scholarship money and out of state waivers to put it roughly on par with LSU cost. We mainly had to cover room/board and sorority dues.

If you let yours go out of State how did you justify the expense? Was is worth it if you forced yours to stay in State for undergrad?
LSU gave my son enough scholarship money to pay for tuition and out-of-state fees.

My son went to Fordham. He had an academic scholarship so what was I gonna do, tell him no?

My daughter started out at Loyola and finished up at LSU. She also had a scholarship but transferred when she changed her major.

My parents wouldn't allow me to stay in-state (LSU).

It was made known from day one it's time to GTFO when you go to college. You're not coming home on the weekend for mom to do laundry or cook you a meal.

I'm so glad they did it that way.

Arkansas and the two SEC MS schools had very attainable OOS waivers when I was applying.

Is this info that can be found on their website? We're LSU through and through and #3 decides she'd like to look at Ole Miss. 2 Brothers are already giving her grief.

$15K out of state fee ... I'm not paying that.

Just starting to read about that. But is that a way to choose a major if they already have a clue of what they'd like to do??

Let them go wherever they want.

Let them pay for it however they choose. Welcome to adulthood.

My son always wanted to go out of state, and when it comes to education I'm all for it if for betterment of one's self. I would have had a different opinion if making a lateral move (i.e. MS State, Bama), but he went to Rhodes College in Memphis and I was happy to pay for it (partial scholarship). Small class sizes and great staff. He would not have been able to land the job that he did out of college if not for his Rhodes degree.

I used the Academic Common Market to get in state tuition to UF Law School for a masters in tax law because Mississippi schools didn't offer the degree.

I went to Ole Miss.

My dad actually wanted us (siblings and I) to leave Louisiana for college. Wanted us to fly the coop and be on our own. We grew up within walking distance to LSU's campus.

I got into much better schools than Ole Miss, but really loved it there and I could come home without a flight. Don't regret it for a minute.

Harvard is the answer, if they are accepted and your family income is less than $150K per year they can attend for minimal cost to the family, Harvard has a ton of money to give away.

Right now Harvard and Stanford are about the cheapest places you can send a kid for college outside of military academy or some sort of scholarship.

Present.

First one went to school Virginia while we were stationed in North Carolina. Now we are in Texas and they are in Virginia (grad school) and West Virginia (undergraduate). Working out well.
