How many of y’all remember the New Orleans Freeway Battle?

It’s crazy to think they damn near built a freeway that would have run right in front of Jackson Square. I know there was a small
portion built underground that later became a parking garage. Similarly built freeways have already been demolished.
The Embarcadero in San Francisco wrapped itself around the shoreline. The earthquake helped move toward the demolition in 1991. It obscured views of the historic Ferry Building and Fisherman’s Wharf.
Seattle recently completed a tunnel to replace the aging Alaskan Way Viaduct. I’ve driven the viaduct several times, and I’m sure when the demolition is completed the waterfront will become even more vibrant.
They even had to cut notches into the roadway so existing buildings could maintain structure.

Now they want to remove the part of I10 that towers over Claiborne Avenue.

Dude could imagine living in that room cars going by your window, that’s nuts

Upvoted for creating a thread about something other than COVID-19 or politics. I also witnessed the ongoing demolition of the Alaskan Way Viaduct earlier this year. What an amazingly complex demolition project.

That is insane. Am I seeing this correctly that the interstate is right next to that building? A car could end up right into that building.. Who ever approved that should be horse whipped.

I believe it was an old laundry building. The highway is State Route 99. I’m not sure how the politics of building this freeway differed from an interstate, but I’m sure it was crazy.

They don't have a lot of Louisiana and Texas drivers to deal with.
Here's what it looked like in action: LINK

Where was this?
When did the state of Louisiana have so much cash available that they were building underground freeways through areas that didn't want them?

Harrah’s underground parking garage is in the old tunnel.

Having a riverfront expressway go through the quarter would have been a complete disaster. Luckily there was some good pushback on it when it was proposed.

Damn. That's pretty cool!
Aren't they also trying to dismantle the elevated portion of I-10 that's in the Claiborne median?

There's discussion about it...probably never should have been built in the first place. If it does go, 610 should be widened before closure.

This is a pretty good read on the project and it’s controversy. Turns out the Riverfront Expressway and the Claiborne Ave. Expressway were both heavily criticized, but the folks fighting for the French QTR had more clout, so the project never went through.
The city wanted to get “momentum” going on the Riverfront so they quickly used tax payer dollars and built the tunnel despite the project not getting the full green light.
Meanwhile the folks who lived along Claiborne saw their old live oaks being cut down as cement was rising to form the new expressway.

I've read that back in the day Claibone Ave. was really nice with big oak trees and gardens lining the neutral grounds. Many people use to meet out there. Now people meet out there for drugs and hookers. It's one of the armpits of New Orleans. Sad to think that it was once really nice.

The $30/month rent makes it worth it though.
