How is it that silencers are legal now. Gotta be a catch, no?

They have always been legal. They have just now become more popular. You just have to file the proper paperwork, and you can legally own a suppressor, short barrel rifle, or full automatic weapon (if you have the cash).

Regulated by the ATF. There is a current Renaissance for "silencers" (really no such thing, that's Hollywood bullshite)/suppressors. There is awareness that this can mitigate the use of weapons to control pest populations (and I'm thinking mainly of yotes and hogs here). Plus, folks who shoot a lot are placing their hearing at risk. Suppressors reduce that risk.

Form 4 and a tax (and a tax on every transfer).
Firearms blog Beginner's Guide to Suppressors
The more you know, right?

Not "silencer." Suppressor. Another misused word I guess.
Not really, the patent filed by Hiram Maxim calls them silencers.

Mine was manufactured in 1916...my great-grandfather purchased it. It has been handed down, father to son, ever since.

We have these quite often. Unfortunately "thoughtful" and "common sense" usually just means "agree with me"

But you gotta get a better story than that like "It was built in 1894, and used by one of the Hole in the Wall gang/cowboys until he was shot dead robbing a train in Utah in 1904" - or some shite shite as that.

I don't own one. Didn't grow up around them even though my dad had a shotgun and a rifle. I think I've shot each of them once. I have shot other guns before and am a pretty good shot, but it wasn't something i enjoyed doing. I don't hunt, and of i were to go to a range, i would rather use a bow. I'm single and have never felt the need to have one. My sister rents my spare bedroom and she does have a small pistol.

I think the fact the 32-40 stopped being manufactured in 1940 is good enough...

I had some, but loss them in a tragic boating accident last year.

Mass round clips should be outlawed. There is no reason to have more than 5 to 7 rounds in a civilian rifle. The same for semi-automatic hand guns.
You're either the dumbest troll I've ever seen or the dumbest person I've ever seen....
Either way, you should probably just put yourself out of our misery

uh, no. look at my post on page 3
quote:
i go back and forth between it and suppressor. when you fill out a Form 4 to buy one, though, you put silencer. when the ATF calls or audits, they call them silencers. when hiram percy maxim invented it, he called it a silencer. there's no proper way, but there's no wrong way either. i use them interchangeably.

Follow up question - how many of you suburbanite gun owners who talk on here about the Call of Duty vengeance you will wreak on anybody that infringes on your way of life chose not to serve in the military during the last 15 years of the war on terror?
