How many kids wish they lose in travel ball and tournaments?
Posted by Byrdybyrd05

After rewatching South Park when both teams were trying to lose on purpose so they can play video games and have fun with their friends, I can’t help to think some kids on the teams feel like that. Some people I know that have their kids in travel ball, I can tell the dad cares more about it than the kid.

Those dads care more about their kid getting a scholarship and/or an MLB contract to help themselves more so than they care about their kid’s well-being.

I grew up with one of the dads and he loved playing baseball growing up. He thought he was going to play for LSU or Miss St and he had all the talent in the world but he didn’t like school so now he is living this through his son.

Son did travel ball for a year, there were a few tournaments a lot of parents were hoping they’d lose that early Sunday game so we could hit the road home.

I coach and have two in REC.
3 years apart.
One kid loves it and wants to do it everyday and gets a ton of joy out of it.
One could give a rats arse other than seeing other kids and the comrade. He's happy parked in RF and visiting and running around practice.
May depend on the kid.

Dad, let Jaxxson play video games if he wants.
He’s not gonna make it to the majors regardless of how much you push him.

If those kids are anything like I was when I was a kid, I just wanted to have fun and stay up all night cutting up

Went to a birthday party for son’s neighborhood friend. Another such kid couldn’t make because of some ball thing. We saw him later while walking the dog and he looked really sad when talking about missing the party.
That’s all I got.

We had some family stay at my parents house last year because their daughter plays soccer in Jackson, MS. They came down here to play at the Burbank soccer park. That sounds miserable to me but I understand for the kids who love it.

Don’t know about the kids but I was on the elevator with a Woman in Orange Beach years ago and she said she was heading to the ball field to watch her son play in a tournament that morning. I said good luck and she said I hope they lose because it is hot out there and she doesn’t want to sit at the ballpark all day.

For the kids and parents who hate travel ball, is there not a league they can play locally?

I know I was not unhappy to lose to save a long wait for next game on a Sun.
On the other hand, I was not happy to see a loss first thing on early Sun after driving 1.5hrs.
AAU basketball is so much better. No Joke.

I wrestled during the summer. I hated it. But my dad never left me quit or miss a single match. I had tournaments I went to where I just showed up, had my hand raised, and was given a trophy because I was the only kid in my weight class.
Now as an adult, I am grateful he did it. I played a lot of video games. I hung out with my friends a lot. But I only got to wrestle in so many tournaments.

The parish rec leagues are going the way of he clock radio. They still exist but they’re really hard to find. In the surrounding Nola area the only place I know of that’s still doing it the old school way is St. Bernard. It’s not quite the same but they have teams and playgrounds based on where you live and you play the different local teams. The problem is that league is so watered down because every really talented kid is on a travel roster.

Probably a lot. When I was a kid my parents entered me in a spelling bee. The next round was out of town and would take up the whole weekend, so I tanked and lost, as I had just gotten a new video game and didn’t want to waste a weekend being a nerd. They were mad at me and threatened to ground me, but I acted all pitiful and said I’d just gotten stage fright (my brother was a big wimp when he was young, so I had a good example to follow). I doubt they believed me, but I didn’t get grounded.

Some parents need to understand that kids want to have fun in the weekends.

Similar to any group of young kids. A big percentage of them don't give a shite about it, or just enjoy being around friends, or their parents are forcing them.
A smaller percentage love baseball and don't want to do anything else on the weekend.
Most kids just want to hang with friends, have fun playing a game, and don't care about winning tournaments.

My daughter plays travel soccer. I did make her start playing (rec) just to get her out the house and learn some things from playing sports. It took off from there with her under no pressure from me. She wanted to get better she puts the work in own her own, I do provide anything she asks for as long as she uses it. She’s never fussed at for making a “mistake” however effort is all I ever ask and she knows it. I have a soccer background so I can help her with film and drills. But I have to tell her some days. Come inside play fortnite and be a kid. She’s legitimately ate up with it and she hates losing. With all that being said though that’s HER. She plays with girls that will quit it all the first boyfriend they get because they are made to play and not playing for the love of the game. And this is at the highest level of soccer in the region so the commitment to play at that level is a grind so it all comes down to each kid and THEIR goals. Mommy’s and Daddy’s goals for the most part ALWAYS ruin the kids enjoyment of any sport.

Not a travel ball kid but…
I coached football for 20 years. Finally giving it up this year to do other things with my time and am looking forward to it. Been a part of several teams that won or played for state championships. By the time the playoffs rolled around in November I was pretty tired of spending every weekday at practice and every weekend preparing for the next opponent. By no means did I ever want to lose in the playoffs, but whenever that last game of the year ended it was a relief to be done with it.
