re: How long will the "friends, food, and family" effect keep natives in Louisiana?

Lived in Houston for a few years and ended up back in Baton Rouge. My wife and I have already started talking about moving to Florida later on in life.

My wife and I may split the scene when we retire.

Wife and I left Louisiana for Texas some 25 years ago - she being from Shreveport and me being from River Ridge. The move has been good to us and nothing to say staying would not have been good to us, just can't answer an unknown. Biggest regret was, and still is, the distance from our families. We moved for career reasons as well as the education of our children and both have worked out fine.
I would return to Louisiana, preferably in the central part of the State, but the wife, not so much as she has developed some pretty deep friendships and more importantly, for both of us, our children and their families reside in Texas - Fort Worth, Lubbock, Wichita Falls - and we really enjoy being in their company
And as far as being around native Texans...they are just people who have much pride in their State, nothing wrong with that, imv.

I don't have any of the problems you've mentioned
my kids go to a great school
I have a great job and make plenty of money
never had problems with healthcare
friends and family are just a bonus for me
Plus you lived out of state and actually came back

Left after graduation from U of LSU in 98.
Come back in for most home games, holidays, family/friend events.
No intention of moving back.

Seeing that I went to college in Arlington,Tx I haven't lived in Louisiana in 17 years. The culture in Shreveport is more similar to Texas than South Louisiana anyway. I would love to move back but the wife isn't interested in that because of the size of the bugs and humidity. But I would love to move back just for the family aspect.

I graduated from college and moved to Dallas a little over three years ago. Turned down a substantial raise and promotion to come back home to NOLA a month ago and it's one of the best decisions I've made.

I left after graduation. I thought I would miss it more than I do. The only thing I do miss are the three things mentioned, and LSU football of course. I enjoy visiting, but am glad I made the move.

It's funny because when I lived in Texas every person I hung out with was from Louisiana

I wonder how many folks born and raised here miss out on opportunities elsewhere (personal and economical) rather to stay here in LA their entire lives?
Staying here for "food, friends. and family" is an economic decision. Those things have an economic value to people that overcomes the financial and other "gains" of leaving.

As long as Houston remains a soulless shite hole of big boxes, strip malls, and spec houses. I'll stay in Louisiana.

Left immediately after graduation and would need a really good career opportunity to move back.
It's just not for me. I love the food and the people are great, but it is not enough to want to live there for the rest of my life

Considering more industrial plants are opening/open here than probably anywhere in the country I find this hard to believe. Not everyone is a business grad.

I personally don't have a problem with the roads, education and healthcare where I am.
Family isn't just a warm fuzzy, it's a pretty huge deal when you have kids and have parents or others there to help out.

Yep. A few years ago I could have moved to San Diego permanently after a 3 month work stint there and made more money. Decided I could manage to make less to be close to friends and family. Haven't regretted the decision once.
Different stroked for different folks though

You know there are other places to go...Maybe your career limits you, but hopefully not to one other option.
I used to get pissed off when I would see people flying a Mexican flag in the U.S. I always thought, "if you like it so much, why are you here?". After I moved out of LA, I kind of understood it. I'm proud to be from my native state and fly my LSU flag high. I just don't want to live there any more...
