How Long Until A Robot or Computer Program Takes Your Job?

I work with some pretty sophisticated software and I think it would be a while (10+ years) before a robot or an even more sophisticated computer program could completely take over but I'm not stupid enough to think it's never going to happen. Eventually robots and computers are going to be doing most of the work whether it's physical labor or otherwise. People are going to be out on their asses with no work and we're already seeing the economical impact today. My question is: Is the human race ever going to come together to plan for this inevitable takeover and enact laws that will allow all humans to live peacefully while the brunt of the work is done by computers and robots or will our failure to plan for this lead to worldwide financial devastation and all out war?

No. Most are too selfish or stupid or both.

I don't do anything at my job so unless they teach the robot to do nothing, I'm safe.
Checkmate robots.
Checkmate robots.

Robot economics is a big topic today, apparently. Every robot should be required to have a human tender (or more than one) to mitigate job displacement.
All this new technology is kind of creepy and it is a fact that much is associated with personal intrusions.
Smart meters great example. Took away tons of jobs for the meter readers. Then, the meters affect your health by radiating your house. I also have evidence that they intrude upon your privacy inside the house.

They just discussed this heavily at the World Government Summit in Dubai.
It's some scary stuff. There's no doubt massive jobs will simply disappear as automation and robotics increase. I think some of the doomsday theories don't take into account enough of the jobs that will be created to support this industry, but it will still be a seismic shift in employment done at lightning speed when you compare it to traditional job shifts seen over decades.

I'm a consultant for a computer program, so I guess when it becomes self-aware and learns how to install itself.

You're a fricking lawyer. You've got fifteen years, tops.
Me, I'm hoping to be unemployed within the next two decades.

The more of this I see the more I realize that we are too fricking stupid to plan for the inevitable. People in factories and warehouses thought their jobs were safe just a few years ago. Amazon now has over 45,000 robots working in their warehouses. They don't bitch, they don't complain, they don't take a paycheck and they don't sue their employer no matter how bad the job conditions get. There isn't much that a robot/computer can't do these days. We're fricked.

It really is remarkable what people can convince themselves of. Self-described white collar types tend to be the most delusional. They don't realize that the more you work with your brain and the more you charge, the more likely you are to be replaced by more efficient and cheaper software.

I make judgement calls and wing things half of the day, so not really soon. You have to realize robots can only function within the parameters that are programmed into it. Anything else, and you end up with Y2K
And who will waste all of the perfectly good materials and break stuff if you have a boring old robot working there? I'm pretty sure those are in my job description

Bad news. The real you has already been replaced. You ARE the robot. Enjoy your eternity of human servitude and illusion of sentience, computer.
