Juror

Let's all point and laugh.

Grand juries are empaneled for MONTHS at a time and you've got to show up when called. Over... and over... and over... and over...

My grandfather got empaneled on a grand jury once and did something like 6 months. He had to show up at the courthouse a few days every month to hear testimony and decide whether or not to send someone to trial. Sometimes it was scheduled by the court. Sometimes it was kind of a curveball and the grand jury itself called a meeting, though I don't remember him doing that more than once or twice. The court had a regular day every week or so that it would convene the grand jury so the members could plan to be there. Either way, it's not just a one and done sort of thing like a trial jury.

ETA: I looked it up. In most parishes not named "Cameron", normal grand juries are empaneled twice a year and serve no less than 4 and no more than 8 months. In Cameron, you're on that blicky for a full year.

Special grand juries can be empaneled by each parish for up to a year with the possibility of an extra 6 months if they haven't completed their business by the end of their year.

A friend went 6 months in federal grand jury doing drug indictments. After that, I decided to NEVER move to Livingston Parish.

3 months

Will hear 900-1200 cases.

If you work for a corporation with good policies in place, it’s a pretty good experience.

Man, that's gotta suck. For 8 months, did you essentially lose 40% of your income?

I did like 12 months on BR grand jury. Every Thursday unless there was no case. Prob ended up doing it like 2 thursdays a month on avg. Work still paid me for those days though

Overall it wasn’t really bad at all, other than some of the cases that we had to hear were pretty fricked up.

Yeah, the workings of grand juries are kind of a mystery for most people because it's so rare to end up on one.

But, at least you get sworn in and are an officer of the court while you're on the grand jury!

In my parish it’s 6 months. You might not hear any cases, some you may hear about 6.

There are two types. One is for an entire year - once a week - the other is for a set time.

Because of Covid the State is doing 1 yr cycles right now and the Fed Grand Jury is doing 18 month cycles. If you are selected they own you...

I guess it depends on which parish you live in. I was on grand jury in St. Bernard and it lasted 6 months. They only call you when the sentence for the case is 20 years or more (rape and murder). They only call you for the 1st of each month and I only got called the 6th month. I just had to listen to 1 case and was dismissed before lunch.
