Funny how when someone does something controversial or supposedly disrespectful to the US flag, people say "it's just a flag". But let someone claim to be offended- especially racially offended- and we have to change whatever flag allegedly offends the victim. Get over your being offended.
It's just a flag.

I don't care either way, but having to have this argument in 2015 is embarrassing.

What does the confederate part of the flag represent to Mississippians?

A symbol and mindset stuck in the past.

I think that #6 magnolia seal flag posted earlier looks sharp. I would strongly prefer it to our current flag.

I agree that the people wanting to change it should be embarrassed

Here is the deal. For a significant minority of people, the confederate part of the flag represents hate. Not the majority but nevertheless, a large number who hold to some of those hateful values. And I am not talking about the ones offended by the flag.

Of course, one little trick was creating a special election for the flag vote so it was the only thing on the ballot.

If this was such a big issue for black voters this should have helped turnout. It probably wouldn't have made a difference but you would think they'd be fired up.

So this delusional racist zealot went into a church and killed 9 people... and the national debate is about a flag?

Aren't we completely overlooking some very important issues like hate groups and mental illnesses to focus on the design and symbolism of a piece of cloth?

So will changing the flag stop these radical hate groups or fix mental illness?

What we are basically doing is akin to ancient time when they would sacrifice a virgin every time a volcano erupts or a severe drought occurs...

FWIW: I want the confederate designs to be remove...

Precisely. Changing a flag will do little or nothing to prevent these types of killings. Nor will "common sense" gun control.

Mississippi GOP Speaker Gunn says, as a Christian, he believes keeping the current flag is akin to a sin, that of putting an offence or a stumbling block (lit. A rock of offense/from Greek-a scandalon.) in the path of a person, especially a weaker person in respect to faith.

It is for me the most compelling argument. Having stated that, I have to note that it will chap my arse when all the secularists, irreligious and Christian haters jump on board with Gunn adopting a faith based rational at best inimical to them.

So is this

Yet pretty much everyone on Earth (besides skin heads) would agree that flag is pretty offensive.

Total bs over the butt hurt but if it comes down to the confederate flag to be flown nowhere and with aggression towards those who do, why not make a slight modification to it. Call not the southern flag. Will look identical but with one small difference. May even not be noticeable to most. It will no longer be the confederate flag but the southern flag, or what ever name it gets. It will no longer have ties to slavery or hate or what ever their excuse is.
