Worked at the Chimes circa 2000-2003. Had a group of Indian guys who stayed after the kitchen closed, 12 am, until the bar closed at 2 am. I didn't care, but didn't enjoy the 2 am trek on foot back to El Cid. Serial killers were rampant at the time

Depends on the place....
Some spots I take the close time as “be out before” and others it feels more like “last seating for a reasonably paced meal at”
Use your judgement for which is which

Bar it’s ok to stay 5-10 after last call.
Restaurant it’s rude to even be in the building at closing time.

You should tip commensurate to any inconvenience you cause.

Depends on how much you are spending.

Restaurants ought to plan something along the lines of
"We close at 10, expect people to finish up by 10:30"
Everybody has an expectation of when they will be done.
AT bars I thought most places have a local ordinance setting the time that everybody knows.

I agree, sorta.
Kitchen closes at 10. At 945 no new tables have come in for 30 minutes. Cooks have been cleaning whole time. 950 four people walk in. Get seated, drink orders, food ordered by 10:00.
Sure, restaurant is still open, but now cooks are turning shite back on, pulling your congelled cream sauce out of the cooler, slicing tomato on the fly, ect

If kitchen closes at ten it closes at ten, not nine fifty.
Now as a customer it would be considerate to order something that isn’t that hard and long to make. That is how I’ve done it unless I’m told kitchen is closed. It is still a business and the staff knows the times and anyone in the business should expect this from time to time. Some of the best customers can be the late crowd.

I recently went to a local pizza joint at 7:45. Apparently they close at 8, and I didn’t know that. I probably left at about 8:10-8:15. Ate normally and then left. Didn’t feel bad at all

Or simply ask the food to go.

I used to let my regulars sit there up until the point I was locking the doors to go home but they also tipped me extremely well

Depends. I went into a restaurant at 9:30 once and asked when they closed and he said 10:00 so I told the guy sorry, we'll go somewhere else. He said no, just order quickly because they close stoves at 10:00 but we could stay as long as we liked.

I’ll say I’ve always taken “kitchen closes at 10” as “order by 10” not as “order something that’s done being cooked before 10.”
That said I’m not trying to roll in at 959 and order 3 of everything on the menu at a place that’s dead and clearly wrapping clean up and counting out registers...
Again, use common sense and your judgement. When you roll into a place you should be able to tell whether they are buttoning things up or are glad to have another customer

Depends on the type place and when you get there. Took a small group out for steak this week had 7:30 reservation they close at 9:00. Had drinks, apps, steak and desert. Cooks left at 9:00 while we were still eating desert probably got out of there about 9:30. Owners were there and I apologized for our group still being there. They said no problem stay until you finish and please come back.
However if we would have showed up at 8:30 it would have taken us until at least 10:00- 10:30 for the same and that would have been unacceptable in my mind, but closing at 9:00 when you don't open until 5:00 seems like a short day to me.

Believe it or not, restaurants understand that people take time to eat and don't plan on leaving at the time the kitchen closes. Shocker, I know.
