Think about when you were a kid and your mom would kick your a$$ if you didn't come home "in time"?

What did she mean by "in time"?

It's the same thing with knocking on a neighbors door -- i.e., when the street lights come on.

If the street lights are on, every kid should be inside his house, and it is then too late to go knocking unless there is an emergency.

Bricks set? Explain the situation. That being said anything can be redone. Having parents myself in their 70's if you came over about this nanny shite after 8 I would not be happy.

Depends on the neighbor. If it's one you never talk to I would say daytime, if it's one you invite over for BBQ then all hours.

If it's too late for the contractor to do anything, then there was no point in knocking on the neighbor's door until daylight.

This is one of those "if you have to ask" type questions. If you have to ask if it is too late, then yes, it is too late.

If it were some sort of emergency then you wouldn't ask yourself this question. This is not an emergency.

When I come back home the wife said that it was a jerk thing to do going over there so late and disturbing them. This was 830.

First off: divorce your wife. She should be on your side.

I'd go knock after midnight if they piss me off enough

If you bring a joint to share with them, it's never too late. They'll also be more receptive to helping.

If you call and I don't answer it means I'm done for the day, it doesn't mean come knock on my door.

I wouldn't answer the door at 8:30 either unless I was expecting someone

Totally depends on the neighbor and the situation. 8:30 doesn't seem too late for most folks, IMO. If you or your neighbors leave the house very early, probably a good thing to hit them up with this stuff the day before.
