it was simply a better deal than paying cash.

Not very, as many have said it my affect my insurance cost, but I never give it a single thought. Our real estate is paid for, we pay cash for vehicles, we debit cards, and I have a Amex green card since 1979, no credit cards for more than 20 years. We have no intentions of every getting another job, or renting anything other than vacation condos.

I don't understand? The fact that I paid cash?

Just speaking from a purely mathematical perspective if you really are able to get an interest rate below 1% then it is a better deal than paying cash even if you do nothing more than hold that cash in a checking account and don't bother to invest it.

I will happily borrow from you or anyone else at 1%. Name your limit. Seriously, I will borrow everything you or anyone else has at that rate.
My FICO hovers around 840 fwiw. Deal?

I will never understand why everyone is so damned impressed by an 800. You get to 860 or 870 on the new scale, I'm impressed.
You can manipulate your score fairly easily.
Just raise all of your credit limits on cards that only do a soft pull

I'm 38 and don't know my credit score.

Important enough to pay a redlight camera ticket.

They call it a credit score but really it just tells money lenders how profitable you are.

Not everyone uses the "new scale." A lot of people still are talking about the rating out of 850. And when talking about the scores people rarely specify which one they are talking about.

Credit score is very important. I'm around 834. Tried for years to attain the 850 mark but I believe it's nearly impossible

This. Especially by not using credit cards for maximum rewards and brand loyalty upgrades, etc.
I'm not even at my A game with this stuff like some of the money board pros, but I've gotten thousands of dollars in flights, hotels, updrades, etc just by using the right credit cards and paying them off each month.
