I would think most of our standard hunting guns today are basically scaled back versions of what used to be military grade weaponry of the past.

I would say otherwise. The gun tech of the 1800's was pretty bad. Big, bulky, single shot weapons with poor accuracy. Reading about the Western expansion and Wars with native Americans gives the impression that early cavalry weaponry was a disadvantage compared to the primitive weapons of the horse tribes.

The question is what type of gun is permitted.

Why don't you Google fricking search that and find out.

There are already laws limiting the types, so this is a matter of deciding what types are becoming too great a threat to the public in the wrong hands.

And in your opinion, the way a gun looks should be a deciding factor?

I honestly can't figure out if you're trolling or if you really are this fricking retarded...

I am asking why you need a weapon that is designed for military use but been scaled back from fully automatic to semi automatic?

Let's stop on the word "need" - because I don't "need" anything to survive and thrive except food, water and shelter. So, there are LOTS of things we don't "need."

So, the better question is: Why do I, Ace Midnight, choose semi-automatic weapons, almost to the exclusion of all others?

1. I was trained to use the M-16 as a uniformed service member of the United States of America. Those skills and experience translate almost perfectly to the AR-15 platform.

2. I have no idea what the future threat profiles are. Therefore, I select weapons based on a highly flexible response to what very well may be an evolving threat to my family's safety in the future.

3. Semi-automatic pistols and rifles are among the best choices for self defense. There are more options for customization. They are, generally, the most pleasant to fire. This is important because developing skill with the weapon is key to it being an effective self-defense choice.

I don't tell you what kind of house to live in or what kind of car to drive. Why should I, as a sovereign citizen of an ostensibly free nation have to take mandatory advice on what weapon I should choose to defend myself and my family? That's rightly dismissed as nonsense.

No. I am asking a question. Why do we need weapons that are not for self defense nor sport? I get you like to expend brass. I get that you get off on the power it gives you. There are truly evil people in the world who have a tactical application that leaves a wake of dead bodies. It is a greater good ethic. The few who enjoy AR are not greater than the whole of society.

Then change your thread title to "How important is it for you to own an assault weapon".

I live in South Louisiana where I am a minority and there is a lot of crime. Hell, a home invasion right up the street just a few months ago.

I also like to hunt.

That is reason enough.

Almost every small arm has a self-defense, recreational or sporting use.

ARs are highly customized and used for 3-gun competitions.

Your bias borders on disgusting.

Why would you be okay with Iran having tanks, planes, nuclear missiles, but you don't want me to have a rifle?

Self-defense is a natural right. Keep and bear arms is a protected, constitutional right (for now.)

Keep on stoking it...

You are ignoring simple, sane reasons given by members of the forum. Your intent is obvious and your stupidity is also.

Your myopic view prevents you from seeing the precedent you are setting. We don't NEED "Assault" weapons just like we don't need fast cars, stronger alcohol proofs, or 4k HDTV's.

Your ok with limiting weapons because you don't see any value and only the negatives, but what's to stop the government from intruding on something you hold dear in the future?

The AR platform has become one of the most popular sport shooting rifles due to the vast assortment of accessories that can be used to modify them to a particular shooters needs.

It has also become one of the most widely used platforms for hog hunting since the hog overpopulation issue has exploded in the last few years.

Just because you, a functioning retard, don't see the "need" for something doesn't mean it's not necessary. I don't see the need for motorized carts at grocery stores... but then again I don't use them.

No. He is shockingly honest with the title. The "other side" of this issue wants complete disarmament. Don't listen to anything else, because it is nonsense for them to argue anything else.

"Assault weapons" is just part of their propaganda. "High capacity" magazine bans are part of this, too. They want an elimination of any weapon that can be effective in a collective self-defense situation. They'll just take the rest out of spite.

It is over when we turn in our rifles. That's just a fact.

Quick google search:

In fact, the history of rifle hunting begins with turning military technology into practical peacetime uses.

Although I believe the AR to be a good platform, I do not believe banning just that type of gun will somehow reduce deaths. I can set up many different guns to operate as "efficiently" as an AR platform. AR is the best for field use for a variety of reasons and why the military uses it, but I can set up a hunting gun to shoot just as fast and get through one murder spree if I suddenly couldn't put my hands on an AR. Banning them because of the way they look compared to military guns is stupid.
