How hard is tennis to pick up for someone in their 40s ?

I'm looking for a new sport to take up. I don't have any friends that play, they all play golf and I think golf is fairly boring, plus you don't get any exercise. I'm fairly athletic and just don't want to go out and get my arse handed to me all the time. Does it take a long time to get any good? Any tips on how to start or is it too late in life?

Walk 18 and tell me you don't get any exercise playing golf.

Tennis is easy to pick up. I played a good bit when I was in High School. The rules are simple and easy to learn. The only hard part is developing a good serve, which I was never really able to master. Only thing tough for someone older picking it up is that it can be tough on your legs. I would avoid it if you have any knee or ankle issues.

Take lessons and it is not too late to take it up.

I signed up for six lessons shortly after my 40th birthday. I play about twice a week now, mainly doubles.
I found it to be easy to pick up, and during lessons, I was able to beat most of the younger players...mainly because I had to learn finesse and strategy and not rely on just smashing the ball.

It's easy, but I'd take a series of lessons. The strokes you learn early are not the ones you'll use as you get better, but you have to start somewhere.

If you're athletic and have solid hand eye coordination it's not hard at all to learn and have fun playing.

This x100. It's over 3.5 miles to walk a 6500 yard course if you hit it right down the middle every shot. You can easily get good exercise playing golf.

Not bad at all. The USTA rates players based on their ability (1-8'ish) and age (18 and up, 40 and up, 50 and up, etc) and breaks them up into groups to compete against each other. The goal is to have people compete against others with a similar skill level (not beginners vs Federer).
Most beginners start out with a 2.5 rating. Most rec players top out around 3.5. College players are around 5.0 to 6.0, for reference. 2.5's suck, but they're supposed to suck. They play other 2.5 so they can suck together. Just be prepared to suck for a while and you'll be fine.

When is the last time you carried a 40 lbs bag, walked 3-4 miles and broke 90?

No problem at all. Clay or Rubico courts will be easier on your knees.

Don't you have a tranny to rebuild or something ?

There are plenty of all age beginner leagues.
I played a little and sometimes I was just outclassed. It happens, and it's honestly tough to get mad.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a 2.5 league? Is it for beginners?
Never mind, I see it now. Thanks for all the answers. Very helpful.

I never said it was a sport dipshit, but people walk for exercise and the OP was saying you don't get any playing golf. Hence the suggestion of walking.
I'd tell you to meet me at sonic but Im too lazy to walk there.
