I flew halfway across the country once.
In the case you mentioned, they're not getting laid on that trip. The ultimate goal is still sex - they're just working toward the goal more slowly.

I had a friend who was a student at Auburn.
He drove to Gainesville to see his girlfriend with the plan of a warm reception.
When he got there she broke up with him. He asked “Why didn’t you just do this on the phone this week.”
She said “I thought it should be done in person.”
He turned around and made the five hour drive back that night.
