How far is too far to live from work?

Moving this summer to start working in Oxford, MS. However, living inside a college town no longer is a want of mine. It's too expensive, people live on top of each other, traffic, etc. I have options to live outside the county - two homes A) 45 minutes away (Sardis) rent free for three months then $500 after (+pay expenses) and B) 20 minutes away (Pontotoc) renting for $600 + expenses. These two homes are about the same, older homes, 3 BR and 2 BR. Or, I could just overpay for rent inside or nearby Oxford. BTW: My workday is 7 a.m.-7 p.m. in Oxford. Just take that into consideration.
What say you?
I am renting out my house in the mean time trying to save to purchase a new house next year. My mortgage is currently just $450 a month and my tenant is paying $800 a month...so I am trying to max my cash and then buy for "forever" home at age 29.

I think 45 min each way is my limit

depends on how much value you place on living where you want to live, a guy at work commutes from AK to MIA

More than 30 min drive (whether it's highway or city, or both) is the limit for me.

My workday in Oxford is 7 a.m.-7 p.m. I just don't know if I could do this without pushing a misery index.

I could do an hour each way, provided I had a nice, comfortable ride.

I do 45 min to 1 hr everyday and that is really really pushing it.

what kind of car do you have? The difference in $100 may not be nearly that much when you think about extra gas and car maintenance. Thats nearly an hour more of driving a day plus all the extra gas and maintenance.

How many miles do those minutes translate to? Are you going to spend the $100 a month savings on gas?

My sister in law worked in San Francisco and lived outside of Chicago.
She would drive the O'Hare fly to San Fran, then work her shift(she worked for United). The flights were free but I still couldn't do it. She thought they were going to transfer her to Chicago so she did it for nearly a year.

I self contract and charge .75 cents a mile for fuel and wear/tear. It is a huge plus but honestly I wouldn't move even if I was getting nothing. I work in and around the Laf area which makes my commute at least a hour 1 way. I say live where you want buddy. If you can handle the commute, then Frick it. I actually enjoy mine. Fwiw I can't stand that many people living next to me myself. I make the haul because I get home to 4 acres and the only noise I hear is birds chirping. Lol

I did BR to NOLA for a year and it didn't bother me at all. I like driving though.

THIS!!! Plus what is your time worth to you ? You can earn more money. You can never make more time.

I went from a 7 minute walk to a 15 minute drive when my office moved.. I can't imagine 45 minutes. Guess that is a product of me doing a lot of things in and around the city. I wouldn't want the drive home from bars/events/good restaurants to be 45 minutes either.

Friend of mine's father works at a nuclear plant. 2 hour commute one way. I mean, it's entirely up to the individual.
