How familiar is this board with Jonathan Haidt?

Recently discovered him last month and have been watching some of his lectures and talks on social theory. He has some really good ideas on the concept of fragility and wrote the book “the coddling of the American mind”.
Basically he digs into how kids today are so coddled and the negative effects it’s having on society. He also discusses how colleges are losing their diversity of thought and basically a lot of other issues this board seems to call out quite a bit. Also how coddling groups and making victimhood a primary identity will eventually lead to the weakening of that group rather than strengthening them.
Of all places this guy is a Yale grade who works at NYU. I have to assume he’s something of a maverick amongst his peers but good for NYU for realizing his value and maintaining a little diversity of thought in their faculty.

The victim mindset is one of the worst characteristics a person can have in my opinion. People can’t quit feeling sorry for themselves.

The Happiness Hypothesis and The Coddling of the American Mind are in the giant stack of books piling up on my desk. Maybe if I turned off the internet, I’d find the time to read them all

One of the most persuasive arguments I've heard relating to social justice/critical theory arises from some of Haidt's findings -
The idea is that CBT - cognitive behavioral therapy - is completely opposite to what we see around us with wokeness/critical race theory etc. As I understand it, CBT is perhaps the leading method for counseling of those with anxiety or depression disorders, and partly centers on teaching patients not to catastrophize (think the worst will happen, see the worst in everything). In other words, it's part of the bedrock for counseling/therapy, is widely accepted and is very common.
So on one hand you have a concept widely promoted in psychology and social sciences (CBT) warring against concepts that are widely promoted by those in the same field. Because wokeness and critical race theory and queer feminism and all the other batshit things now coming to the surface do the complete opposite of CBT - they train you to see racism everywhere, to see everything as a slight against your queerness, to see every system as a system of white supremacy.
In short, some of the people loudest about social justice issues are promoting an ideology that undermines the very methods they use to help people. So it's not surprising that 25 year olds rioting and protesting are hopeless, miserable and violent. They've been trained to do the very thing that psychologists and counselors work to undo.

Its happening now with BLM, NOLA "pay my rent" movement, CHAZ, and all the other liberal protestor garbage on the daily news cycle. The weakening already started but they don't realize it. It happens when they take things to the extreme and it begins to fall on deaf ears...as in, remove the Interstate highway movement. Being "woke'd" goes both ways and people now see through the bullshite and ignore the intent of the original message.

Quite the opposite. He’s calling out the entire system of crybaby bitches, in a very scientific way.
His concept of heterodox academies is great, but I fear we’ve gone too far down to rabbit hole at this point. He made that push long before this latest bizzaro world development of BLM getting uncorked in the mainstream.

You may want to go on and forward those to the parents who fight back against school systems when they try to discipline kids. Parents lead policy in most areas because of the lawsuit mentality. The book also gets into "fearful parenting" and the helicopter bullshite we've started seeing that absolutely fricks a kid up.

I wouldn't care about these losers besides the fact that they drive the rest of society down with them. frick the victim card and those that play it any chance they get.

Also, for what its worth, he calls bullshite out across the board. He's pretty centrist and pretty readily points out that each party has valuable contributions to the political spectrum. That probably wouldn't fly here for some.

Big fan of Jonathon Haidt. I’ve read the righteous mind and coddling of the american mind. Both were very good books.

He speaks extensively of Brett Weinstein in Coddling.
