Do most Europeans speak English or are there pockets of the continent where only the native tongue is spoken?

As long as you can recite some Koran in Arabic you'll be fine

To be fair, there's not much English spoken in a good bit of BR too

yes, most Europeans know multiple languages.

The French are the biggest jerks about having to speak English to visitors

Italy and France are fairly easy but the French seem particularly annoyed when you only speak English. I spent a cup of tea in Spain and it was similar.

Some say if you make an attempt to speak the local language, they will be more helpful.

Europeans talk with their hands anyway, some expressive pointing is all you need to get by.

Yeah, I knew a guy that lived in Paris for a little while when he was growing up. Told me once they found out you were American they turned into complete dicks.

Probably 4 out 5 speak some English, anyone under 35 is probably fluent. Have a close friend that has lived in Germany continuously since 1982 and has never bothered to learn much German, wasn't needed.

If you can manage to butcher the language just enough, they will speak English so they dont have to hear you destroy their language anymore... and they'll speak English better than you will speak their language

Rick Steves taught me that

This really only happens with Parisians. Brittany, Lyon, Nice, Normandy, and the southern coast (Provence?) are full of locals that are much friendlier.

I've heard that Parisians are arrogant jerks but country folk are cool.
