Anywhere of decent size in Western Europe you will be fine with just English. Smaller towns will probably be hit or miss.
Eastern Europe is less likely.

The French just get very annoyed if you are a jerk American and make no effort.
If you say Bonjour and tell them in French that you don't speak French well, and ask them if they know English, they will be unbelievably nice.
Western Europe in most cities the will speak English.

This. Hell, in Amsterdam the locals will speak better English than you and I'm not kidding either.

Very easy, especially if you aren't going anywhere rural. Even in the middle of no where France and Italy, most speak enough English to understand

I fricking hated Paris. Back when my dad was in the service and we lived in Germany we went to Paris and my dad asked a random guy for directions(in French) and the guy spit on him and called him a "stupid fricking American"
