I figured out eventually that for me it was that I was too busy to enjoy anything. Backed off the amount of scheduled shite I had to do and stopped trying to fit too much in. Eventually felt much better, wasn’t instant.
I've never thought of it this way - if anything, the exact opposite. Guess sometimes you just need to hear/read it to really think about it. Going to give this method a shot to see what happens.

I don't think it's fair to say that the medicine killed him. I think it IS fair to say that the medicine didn't help him when he was already at the end of his rope. Meds work for a lot of people but they also DON'T work for a lot of people.
I am very, very sorry for the loss of your friend.

Medication saved my life, more so for the OCD than depression. It’s still a struggle but at least I can function.

Just want to give props to the OT for posting mostly legit info and advice for someone looking for actual info and advice. Nice change of pace from the norm here

Change something in your life. I've heard making sure you do 5 positive things for you each day helps. My Aunt did it. Even if small things. Then write them down and do it again the next day. When you start doing good things for you, you feel better about you and life in general.

I'm depressed most days of my life.
No reason to go through life like that.

Meds worked for me on 2 occasions. Weaned off of them once I felt back to normal. Getting enough sleep to not feel like shite on top of being depressed was most of the scenario.

Going through being treated like trash by parents and my siblings because I'm the only gay person on either side of the family...I went through depression a hell of a lot until I moved away from their holier than thou asses. U have to change your life. It's like I said when I pulled my head out of the sand..and it's so damn simple..look around and what you see is all your going to get...that's it... nothing..not a damn thing more.
If you want to better yourself, you have to change everything. No quick fixes. And if it doesn't work, seek medical help and be 100% honest with the doctor. Thankfully I never chose to go on drugs. The best thing about getting the hell out of the Deep South besides the super hypocritical judgemental religious assholes, is I can enjoy the outdoors year round... especially in the summer and not die of a massive heat stroke. And being outdoors and in nature.. especially nature that is freaking beautiful opens ones eyes to the beauty of the world. If that don't work, pop some pills or smoke some weed.

Don't wait...it won't get better. Force yourself into uncomfortable situations... especially social situations, attack any fears that you know hold u back...me..heights and deep water..once you overcome all of them, your depression or severe procrastination..which usually accompanies depression will mostly leave you. If that fails to work..then see a doctor.

First question is how is you life?
I went through a depression back during college when I dropped out of pharmacy and didn't know what the hell I wanted to do.
I had no aim or direction in my life. Not knowing what to do with the rest of your life is horrible. I'm 100% that's what caused it.
I figured it all out and all good now. I do have spouts of, I wouldn't call it depression, sadness maybe. Usually happens late at night after everyone else has gone to bed. That can also make you feel kind of alone too. When I lay in bed and think about my aging parents and feel how short life is, it sometimes gets me.
I see life in stages.
Baby
Kid
Teen
College
Job
Retirement
Death
I'm retiring in 8 years. I'm getting close to that last stage. I feel retirement might cause a little depression when it comes.
Weed helps..

Agreed.. no matter what drug you use or anything that addresses any issues you have the body will always adapt and the effectiveness of said drug eventually fizzles out.

Do you drink? Of so stop immediately.
A riend of mine (not me, I only drink just a teeny amount) did this at the end of last year after suffering depression. He is so much better now.

I have degenerative disc disease and a disc bulge at l5/s1. Causes me a lot of pain and discomfort. It's been over a year now, and stretching has helped tremendously, so I don't think that's the issue.
I just feel sad and lonely, even though I see my son a lot, and have friends and family. This just hit me like a ton of bricks, and it isn't getting better.

Other really...really good advice...get a dog...or two. And I don't mean some lap dog shite monster that if ya sit on it you'll kill it..get a real dog that is well known for being friendly, or even goofy. A WTF? mixed breed is best especially a shelter dog. My dog Petey brought me the best 11 years of my life. After he died last year it felt like a part of me died with him... still haven't gotten over it, but that's fine because when it hurts, it shows you have a heart. I'd trade all the rest of my life left on this Earth to have just one more hour with that flea bag!

One has probably mentioned it, but does anyone recommend a good therapist in the BR area? And how do they go about billing for that? Can it be expensive?

Have you thought about not throwing a pity party for yourself? For fricks sake, man up.
