The real leather ones are slippery stones when new.

I’ve done the wet it, then scrub the wax off once it dries method. I beat the crap out of them with a wooden bat, mostly on the seams.

They just don’t get springy like an old one.

This guy has it down:

But I don’t have a bristle grinder, shaving cream is nuts, no telling what that leather conditioner is, heat gun, mud...

I’m looking for something more doable. I hear a dryer works, but I don’t want to break ours.

Trying to get these 695s broken in and I have another Vapor Elite on the way. That’s the one I want to turn into a butter ball like the LSU game ball pictured.

there are 3 known ways to break in a football:

1) use it regularly for about 2 weeks
2) let vince wilfork fart on it
3) have the ball blessed/touched by joe burrow

You can try a very fine grit sandpaper to kind of rub the new "wax" off. Then, the best way to break it in is to play with it. Go outside and play catch. The sweat on oil from your hands will, over time, condition it. And every time it hit the ground on a missed throw it will scuff it up a little more.

they don't play catch, they play footsies.

which is why he wants springy. he needs to make the balls better to make his son appear better.

On the broken in ones it feels like the bladder and leather have fused, it gets more springy off the bounce. My son plays QB and kicks, but his favorite ball to do both with is the broken in one. If we go throw he picks the Broken in ones. Kicking the 695s sucks too, and those are kicker balls. They need something. More kicks, I know...

He’s QB as well. I air them up over 11 psi...so spongy is the wrong term. The broken in ones bounce much better. They just sound different too.

Just keep kicking it. It doesnt matter if you lose some hang time kicking around the yard.

If he’s a QB, bouncing them is not the outcome you desire.

Just put them in the dryer....

Some NFL kicker use to do that, till the powers that be heard of it. That’s one of the reasons there’s a designated kickers ball...

QB in 8th grade will be more RB than anything. He threw 1 TD pass last year and ran in the rest.
