Radar works based on reflected energy. Radar guns emit a narrow band of energy waves. That energy travels at a fixed rate of speed. The energy reflects off of the front of the target vehicle and travels back to the radar gun. The amount of time that takes is compared to the time the previous wave of energy took to return and the speed of the object can be calculated based on the difference. If the radar gun is in motion, then the computer inside of it can factor that motion into time calculation to render a correct reading.

Wait until you find out some radars can detect the fastest speed in a group of vehicles, it’s really going to blow your mind

yeah, but cops don't necessarily pull over the fastest one.

i got a ticket like that back in my late teens. Conversation between men and the cop:

me: why did you pull me over when there was a whole group of us going the same speed?

cop: you ever go duck hunting?

me: yes

cop: a flock of ducks flies over your blind. you fire a shot. one duck falls. which duck you bringing home with you?

me (under breath): a-hole

wouldn't the path and angles of each vehicle come into play in this wild formula?

What?????

The simple answer is no. Not in this case.

How? is it using a gps sensor of sorts to know how fast the radar is traveling?

About 50% of police academy training is guessing car speeds. They’re great guessers

The frequency sent out instantly bounces back to the receiver and it does the math to calculate the difference. This concept is not that hard to grasp to most but you’re chad so here we are

It's probably connected to cars/motorcycles computer and getting the accelerometer reading I would guess.

I know you're doing your best to appear to be so smart and i'm so stupid but you are not explaining how the radar knows how fast itself is traveling. I'm just trying to understand how the tech works and what mechanisms they have in place for when moving or stationary etc.

That or GPS, my phone and radar detector both use GPS to determine my vehicle speed, it matches what the speedometer of my car says.

i'm fine with you guessing but you've been acting like a complete jackass and now here you are guessing at my question cause you don't definitively know either. Good day.

Why don't you GTS (google that shite) and figure it out for yourself? Call the radar manufacturer and ask them.

The radar gun runs a program internally. It's all trigonometry. The sin vs cos of the target in relation to the gun.

Older guns had to be stationary. Newer ones can account for vehicle speed and direction. Though yes cops do lie too, and they will not and do not have to show you the radar.
