How do you select a primary care physician?

Pretty dumb question for a 33 year old man but I haven’t had one since I was a kid and went to a pediatrician. I’m very fortunate to have avoided any illnesses that have required a doctor’s visit and the rare issues I’ve had were solved by an Urgent Care.
I’m mostly wanting to get into a Sleep Center but they said I need a referral from a primary care physician. Urgent Cares “most likely won’t work” was what the person on the phone said. I probably need a regular physician anyway at my age.
Just googling it shows a bunch of names and offices but how do I pick one? Is there any real way to evaluate the doctors before selecting one?

I’ve gotten a referral without ever stepping foot in the office. Just call and say you need a referral to the sleep center. Likely they’ll just write it up.
That being said, I went to a few over a course of a few years and picked the one I like best.

I found one that’s usually available on short notice and is relatively young. I don’t have many issues, so getting in and out is the most important thing to me.
Why waste half a day to see some great doctor for a common physical or when you get a sinus infection?

Just went and saw one the other day. ZocDoc was useful for finding available people around my office. I don't trust the reviews on there, but it enabled me to easily see schedules and availability. Then went with the hottest one.

Ask your friends if they like their doctor. Go to one of those doctors.

How? Ask a friend in the area for a recommendation. Call that doctor, tell them you want them to be your PCP and that you need a referral. Call your health plan and tell them you want that person to be your PCP. Get referral. Most doctors will want to see you first before giving a referral if they've never met you before. Sometimes they will give you one over the phone after that, depending on what you need it for.

This right here. Doctors tend to get stuck in their training.

This and hot is a close 3rd
I'd never trust a female doc for anything serious but for a GP they're fine

Yep. At least a dozen of my friends/coworkers go to the same one because we all like him & referred our friends.

I don't have one.
I just don't get sick. (Not "trip to the doctor" sick at least).

Check and see who accepts your insurance
Decide between male or female
Ask if they're accepting new patients
The rest kinda works itself out bud.

I tried asking a few friends but the ones they recommended are either not accepting new patients or don’t have an opening until late May.

I don’t either but I’m having bad issues sleeping. I figure a physical wouldn’t hurt.

I lucked out. Mine somehow always calls patients back either right on time or early. He’s the most on time doctor I’ve encountered.

I called the closest office to my house and asked for the first appointment of the day with whatever doctor was available.
