I just read about a guard at a prison in Sydney, Australia who was stabbed with a syringe full of blood infected with HIV. Even then, his chances of actually contracting the virus was 1 out of 200.

Actually, with the current research and treatment protocols for HIV exposure... if you get the appropriate antiviral treatment immediately after exposure, the chances are excellent that you would not get the infection. The problem is that if the treatment is delayed, HIV will infect the T-Cells and go into hibernation, a state where the antiviral medications are ineffective.
Thus, most HIV specialist believe that patients with HIV can live a regular life expectancy, as long as they take their medications.
