How do you haggle at jewelry stores?

So, a few months ago, I asked about the best place to search for engagement rings. The consensus was to buy online. Well, I haven’t pulled the trigger yet.
I was at the mall and just strolled into Zales. Told the lady what I was looking for and showed a few pictures of rings my gf has sent me. Low and behold they have one of the exact rings I had a picture of. Not only did they have a new one, but the also had a preowned one. They currently have a sale going for 20% off the new and 30% off the preowned.
I was told by my boss that I should ask for 50% off the preowned. Sure that sounds easy but I’m not exactly sure the approach I should use. They’re roughly in the same price range. $2999 for the new and $2900 for the preowned. 50% would be nice and the price range I was looking to get. What y’all think?

Went to a smaller store and paid cash. Got a pretty big discount. Like 2k off 10k

Just ask what the best price they could give you is. If they won’t meet your budget, walk away.
Just note that even if the ring is the “style” she wants, it could be a really low quality diamond. Some women care about that, some women don’t. Just something to consider.

It’s not how I purchased my wife’s ring, but since the guy asked I was trying to be helpful.

Luckily mine did not. That whole 4 months salary thing. I don't really remember how much money I made back then but I'm pretty sure that I spent about 3 weeks salary

Be a price commander not a price taker.
Meaning find the ring do your research on how much you want to pay, find similar diamonds online, etc....
Then tell the person how much you are willing to pay, and if they say no, walk away.
