This has always been my theory on them, I've never tried (always been stupid and dealt with the PITA of a bigass ladder) but never understood how I could trust the suction cup to do its job and not end up dropping and shattering the old or new bulb. Especially when trying to get new bulb screwed into the socket

I have a long piece of 2x2 I put either a small wad of duct tape or double side tape on the end and that's how I change out the bulbs in my stairwell.
