ITT: adults who rationalize their use of violence against children because they aren't intelligent enough to figure out more constructive ways to discipline their children

It can have a place in the raising of children. It should not be your go to for discipline..you have to find "leverage" to be able to get the desired results you seek..If you do spank, and my wife reminds me of this, don't do it while angry.

If you live in California and if you spank your kids don't tell anyone. They look at you like you would look at someone that says that that they beat their wife. And they are very similar really.

I spanked my kids sometimes, but if I had the chance to do it over I wouldn't.

Yeah, that's definitely going too far. You should have left it up to your sister what kind of punishment she wanted to do unless she explicitly told you that you could spank the child. Very poor decision.

I got my tail beat when I needed it. Stuff like forging progress reports, lying, smart mouthing, and I feel I am a better person for it. I always understood why i was being punished, and to this day I still remember every beating i got.

It's my opinion that a controlled spank can be an effective and appropriate part of a parental disciplinary toolbox. Obviously this doesn't include spanking done violently, without appropriate cause, or as a single method of discipline.

The funniest thing in the world to me is watching mom/dad trying to reason with a child to get their discipline across. Dad usually ends up pissed as hell, mom usually ends up crying, kid ends up in different.

I was never even punished as a kid. My parents were the "talk it out" types. I got screamed at good a couple of times, but I wasn't spanked or grounded. My parents explained right and wrong and I listened. Simple as that. I was a boring kid.

The area of the brain responsible for reasoning is the last to develop. Young kids simply do not have the ability to reason the same way we do as adults.

Some kids own their parents. I was a child in 70's and 80's and when you acted up in public you would get a "get your mind right" swat on the butt...not hard just enough to get your attention. The worst part was other adults egging on your mom...now they call the police

Just give them the face and tell them to take a lap.

Pay attention to what works and do that.

Know the difference between discipline and violence.

People who are 100% against it and people who resort to spanking every time they need to enforce discipline are both wrong IMO.

Everyone is different and there are different forms of discipline that will work. The key is finding the right way for each situation

In moderation or as a last resort, it is a valuable tool. Overboard and its a bad thing.

But there isn't anything worse than a little shite kid with no fear of the mere possibility of a spanking.

This is my view at this point without kids. Different methods work for different kids. I see kids acting out more now than they did when I was growing up imo.

I notice this more in children of single moms. Especially boys.
