How Do YOU Define Smart?

It seems like every parent thinks their kid is smart. In grade school the kids who make the best grades are the "smart kids". Is it assumed that smart equals success?
There is this guy who is in his mid to late 40s I know. He is extremely intelligent, but he has worked as a cashier at a grocery store his whole adult life. On his ACT he either scored a 34 or 36.. He went to LSU for 2 semesters. The majority of the time there he would ride the bus around campus and read.
When he first started, he went to class and would correct the professors/instructors or he was always questioning them (this is something i heard second hand from a few people so I don't know the exact story) so it was pointless for him to go to class.
Since he was in his early 20s his mom had to drive him around because he had got into a few wrecks within a short period of time and his insurance was too high.
He can't hold a normal conversation. While you would consider him "book smart" he isn't "socially smart". But people throw out the word smart and I know it is a broad term, but should grades be the only measurement used to determine if someone is smart?

Generally, the quickness of someone's reaction to controversial matters. If they are quick to react, I usually peg that person as a dolt. I'm a firm believe that patience and intelligence go hand in hand.

Never really thought about it but it's probably inversely proportionate to number of topics a person starts.

I put my Cornell education to the back of my mind, roll up my sleeves and engage with the rapscallions of the Off-Topic Lounge.

Very high level of common sense.
I know a bunch of people that are ridiculously book-smart, yet I don't know how they get through life on a daily basis.

Sounds like the education system failed him. He probably could have qualified for an IEP at a young age for being a gifted child. Also, probably on the spectrum and needed support for that as well.
"Smart" to me is being able to take advantage of one's ability. You can have a high IQ, but being smart is taking advantage of that high IQ and succeeding in whatever you have chosen. Average and even low IQ people can be "smart" by hard work and effort. Mostly, "smart" people were surrounded by a good support system at a young age to help them find the right path and teach them how to find that advantage.

Someones ability to problem solve.

My definition of smart is someone who can analytically assess situations in real time and be able to critically think/create a plan to attack the situation.
The next level would be someone who does the above and can do it multiple ways to get the outcome desired.

Imo being a leader rather than a follower is a great indication of smarts and self confidence. Hope this works out , doesn’t appear to be a good sign

The opposite of poster OweO. This was an easy one.

The ability to problem solve in most situations.
The ability to think beyond superficial levels, the ability to defend one self, the ability to fit in with various groups. Not distracted by shiny objects.

Yeah, I think it is. He is a huge hockey fan. There are not many hockey fans in South Louisiana, but he will just all of a sudden start spitting out hockey stats
Friends of mine who used to work at the same grocery store he worked at, while they were in HS, told me that it was funny to watch him check out people.. Especially older people.. Because they would walk away like their mind was blown..
It was a small, family owned grocery store so most of the customers were familiar with him and knew how to engage with him, but when people who were not regulars would go to him, they said it was like he was speaking a different language to them...
But as insanely smart as he was, it was as if other parts of his brain wasn't as.. I guess.. functional.
