How do we decide what is and isnt mental illness?

When a person hears voices in their head they are schizophrenic. They are treated and the voices can go away or at least symptoms improved.
But if a boy hears a voice in his head that says he is really a girl that is considered normal and you are a bigot if you disagree.
Sad thing is there are a tiny number of people out there that actually have ambiguous genitalia and gender issues.

If they disagree with you politically it is mental illness. Otherwise they are just unconventional.

Certainly nobody advocates that we cave into a paranoid schizophrenics’ delusions and let them believe the CIA is really monitoring them from their dental fillings
I have no idea why transsexuality isn’t treated in the same vein. We have more than enough data to support the idea that they are mentally ill and that playing into their delusions is not helping.

There are several reasons why schizophrenia is treated differently than trans-whatever, but one major one is that we actually have a good idea of what’s going on in the brain of schizophrenics and, therefore, how to treat it.

If a middle eastern man who lived 2,000 years ago talks to you, it's okay. In fact, you might even be ostracized by society in certain regions if you don't have frequent communication with such a figure and acknowledge it publicly. It's certainly a prerequisite for public office.

There are books on this by former individuals involved that point out the agenda-driven restructuring of the DSM.
Read the books Saving Normal, Book Of Woe, or Psychiatry Under the Influence.
The positions taken are based heavily of social pressure and politics.
