yeah but outside of some extreme outliers, I fail to see situations where in a generalized sense, and regardless of your knowledge base as to the root cause of the delusion, it is okay to tell a delusional person that their perceptions that are demonstrably false are nested in reality and that they should act on those delusions.

The positions taken in the DSM are quite obviously influenced the current social and political landscape. I think this definition covers its bases pretty well, though.

Well the “delusions” experienced by a schizophrenic and a trans-person as vastly different, for one. I am mostly on board with you about the treatment of trans-people, though. We need a better understanding of what’s happening on a neurological level. The whole “well yer a boy if ya got a deeick” is patently unhelpful, nonetheless.

The opposite of that, “you can pick what you want to be based on muh feelings”, isn’t helpful either.

Riddle me this....

How does a body that is born as a male, from the standpoint of genitalia, inherently know that, although born as a male, it was really a mistake and intended to be female.

How does a body and brain know that?

It’s an interesting dichotomy, especially when you are talking suicide

Anytime someone commits suicide that seemed somewhat functioning, we get a parade of “WE NEED TO TAKE MENTAL HEALTH SERIOUSLY”

But when you look at the almost unbelievable attempted suicide rates when it comes to Transgendered folks, the conversation pivots to “WE NEED TO BE MORE ACCEPTING OF THEM”.

Agreed. Just like politics, the fringe should be ignored.

It’s influenced by the media. Only one demographic believes they are “transgendered”. The idea is to get these kids taking hormones when they are in their teens so they will be permanently sterile. Even if they decide that they were crazy in a few years they still can’t have kids

Scruffy is 100% correct.

The DSM is a political document written with money and social ideals as the driving force.

For treatment purposes, maybe not. It’s a biological truth though and the alternative of having 30+ gender definitions including “gender blender” (mentioned for comedic effect only) is even more harmful.

It’s not my field, so I can’t say what dictates ones perception of self, but perhaps a psychological approach that can ascertain on a case-by-case basis what is going on is just as valuable as searching for genetic markers and chemical imbalances. But the goal should always be to bring these people back to reality, not to force the rest of functioning society to play by the rules of their delusions.

When the brain is telling the body to chop off it’s own genitals, I’d say there’s something wrong with the brain.

Everyone is mentally ill.

Some of us are just better at telling the voices to STFU.

Most of the time.

I would have disagreed with you some years ago, but this day in age, I totally agree with you. Especially with the proliferation of social media platforms. Some of the comments people make are downright awful.
