The brain just deteriorates to the point where it can't control normal functions. Functions for existence, eventually.

I have someone going through it...
They forget to eat, forget to clean themselves, forget to do the basic things people have such as taking care of themselves.
The disease will not kill them but what happens from the disease will kill them.

So,forgetting how to eat is a main reason?

Sanity issues which lead to other issues as well. If you are not cleaning yourself and defecating on yourself you are not going to be healthy unless someone is cleaning you.

Thanks for the explanation. Hopefully one day there will be a cure for this terrible disease.

Brain deteriorates to the point where the person can't eat or breathe. It's really sad for the family

Aspiration pneumonia, infected decubitus ulcers, complications from falling down are fairly common. And the normal diseases of old age.

Essentially the disease progresses to the point where the person can't maintain functional activities. Mobility eventually decreases leading to musculoskeletal issues, infection risk, pressure ulcers, etc.

It is very similar in the sense that AIDS doesnt't kill people. It's the opportunistic complications that result from being highly disposed to life threatening infection and other issues that kill people.

Hope that helps.

Just to add on, I deal with a lot of people with those two diseases in particular. People forget to eat, forget where they are at mid walk, or forget they are capable of getting up on their own leading to falls. Falls are usually the devastating event sense they can't remember to maintain their weight bearing status or even that they can't walk on their healing hip. It's a vicious cycle.

I imagine they do. I am sure it is very hard to see this in a loved one.

Most die from infections, specifically sepsis secondary to pneumonia, infected ulcers and UTIs. They lose the ability to control bowel/bladder function and swallow their own food, leading to E. Coli UTIs and aspiration pneumonia. They are immobile for long periods which leads to decubitus ulcers.

Eventually if they avoid that fate, they simply let you to go by stopping artificial feeding.

Grim.

I think planned assisted suicide would be better while still have faculties. I'd like to be normally aware when I go out the brain to the light.

I'm a supported of assisted suicide, but not for people without mental faculties. Malicious family members and those tired of caring for the person would abuse the frick out of that.

Assisted suicide is a choice, but that's essentially euthanasia.

My maternal grandfather died of Alzheimer's. It is absolutely, truly awful. People with Alzheimer's are not the same person anymore, and the family has to watch the ghost of their loved one decline while being responsible for their well-being until it happens. I was sad to see him go, but his death was bittersweet; I couldn't stand to see him in that state and I couldn't imagine he was having a good time being alive.

For my grandfather, he was eventually bedridden and started getting bedsores, and died due to infection of the sores.

My wife's grandmother just passed awah on Monday from this. It was terrible watching her get worse and worse over time. She had a nurse that stayed with her to make sure she could do everyday things but they couldnt do anything for was the constant depression she had. Yes its a horrible disease to have and I wish it on no one.

My daughters boyfriend's Grandmother just died from it. She got to where she wouldn't eat and essentially starved herself until she shut down. It was truly heartbreaking.
