Who knows but I know we did it in my tiny ETx town. Kind of of fascinating question by the OP

Kinda sorta not really.
Blowing into your cart is actually bad for it b/c your spittle can get in there and damage the metal contacts.
To properly clean an NES (or any other game cartridge from that era) you need to hit first hit it w/canned air and then wipe the contacts w/an ear swab and isopropyl alcohol.

The special editions that had a full magazine walkthrough of games like Final Fantasy were the absolute best
I've still got that one somewhere.

It absolutely worked.

There was no canned air back then

Fixing video games is built into kids' dna.

Yes there was, but it was expensive, and not many stores around carried them since they were mainly used for keyboards. The early cans had Freon in the cans. Then people started getting high off the cans when they stopped putting Freon. That is when they started putting a bittering agent to get people to stop huffing the compressed air.

Dust Off gas duster has been around since the 70s.

If blowing air into it didn't work the true fix was inserting the cartridge 95% of the way and then forcing it down.
worked
Especially for Double Dribble.

I figured out the other 5% because I was desperate as frick. I couldn't get Tecmo Super Bowl to work no matter what I tried (blowing in the cartridge and console, 95% in, etc). I got it to work by inserting the cartridge 95% in, pushing all the way down and then lodging another game on top inside the machine where it wouldn't pop back up........shite was 100% money.

Blow into cartridge
Insert halfway and then bang it forcefully into the console
Continuously hit reset button until game begins

Absolutely. Shitloads of dust got in those things INSIDE the Nintendo in the two hours since we had previously played.

100%. Didn't matter if it was Atari, NES, or Sega. A buddy of mine had the motor go out in his PS1 while we were playing Final Fantasy. Almost instinctually, he grabbed it and flipped the console upside down and it started spinning the disc again. Didn't even lose any progress. It was a thing of beauty in the moment, so distinct of a need being met. I was as happy in that moment as the first time I touched boobs.

Today I learned 80s/90s Tyler w/our high tech Radio Shack and fancy air conditioned mall was actually the big city and not middle of nowhere East Texas.

Dude, I loved Broadway Square. Going there instead of Longview Mall was a treat

My family lived in Whitehouse for a minute in the early 90s. I felt more connected to the world growing up in Red River Parish.

I saw an article in Readers Digest. That’s how I found out.
There used to be a Nintendo magazine that came out once a month, I had to ride to school with this nerd who would bring that stupid magazine and read it on the way to school and tell us to stop making noise, which only made us be even louder.
Anyway, I remember that frick face telling us that it wasn't blowing in the cartilage that works, it was blowing into the Nintendo. Something about the particles getting stuck on something in there. Every friday he used to get a free pizza hut pizza for reading enough books in a week and his grandma would take him to rent a nintendo game.
