The other fix I used was inserting the cartridge just barely enough so that you could push it down into the console. That seemed to work more than blowing on the end

I'm still unsure what exactly this did, but it certainly worked

If the game wasn’t working, then the only workable solutions for us was to check the connection between the cartridge and the console. Considering most of us just left the games out on the floor, it made logical sense that the cartridge was gathering dust.

Blow on it to blow off the dust.

Once it worked once, it would be assumed to work all the time.

We’re all ten kids your cousins?

It just takes one of those ten to hear about it from one of their friends. Who could have learned it from one of their friends.

Or by visiting family on a holiday.

You didn’t have the internet and TV wasn’t as prolific. So you talked a lot more about things you heard. And in cases like this when you found it solved a real problem you were more likely to pass it on.

Btw unless I’m mistaken this is a myth.

That’s what we “thought” they were doing but really you were putting a layer of condensation on the contacts, that had started to corrode and not be as conductive.

blowing air into it didn't work the true fix was inserting the cartridge 95% of the way and then forcing it down. That shite was money.

I read an article in Readers Digest about doing this. That’s how I learned about it

I learned it how I learned everything: on the school bus.

Things I also used…
qtip with rubbing alcohol.
Pushing cartridge up and down really fast about several times.
Wiggling it back and forth to find just the right position.

I’m pretty sure I came out of the womb knowing the fix was to blow on the cartridges.

Hate to burst your bubble, but people were blowing on cartridges before NES. It was a regular thing for Atari 2600 well before NES. So it was just a carryover.

I saw a meme that one of our generations most impressive accomplishments was that without internet or phones every middle school in the country circulated the rumor that Marilyn Manson had a rib removed so he could suck his own dick

Some things don't change though. Plug cord into smart phone, crap, not working. Blow into charging receptacle. Boom. Genius.

Still works every time.

I learned it independently. Mostly because it seemed like an obvious solution.

This - plus we’d have to put another game on top plus about 5 baseball cards -
Worked 90% of the time every time.

There were also different button combinations for effects, cheat codes to advance to later levels, short cuts, and sorts of stuff we knew before using the internet. Many were in magazines but many were not but still spread around.
