I was reading this article about an old DirectTv satellite that has come to the end of its life:
DirecTV Satellite
That made me start thinking about what all is really orbiting our planet and how crowded the space around Earth is. I found this article from Popular Science that pointed me to an interactive map:
Popular Science
The map puts into perspective how much stuff is really out there, and it is amazing to think about. We have managed to nearly make a traffic jam in space.
Stuff in Space
Check it out.

If I was Elon, I would have designed a better looking truck.

f.y.i. if you are referring to the area of space that would be called "orbital region around Earth" (where our satellites exist)… this is technically not "Earth's Orbit". That would be the path we carve out traveling around the Sun.

Thank you. You beat me to the correction/clarification.

I’ve just wondered how spacecraft don’t hit any of it on liftoff leaving the atmosphere

The map puts into perspective

No it doesn’t. The maps are not to scale. We are not launching satellites the size of Rhode Island into space.

That’s like saying the Superdome is getting crowded. There is over 250,000 pieces of sand in it.
