I don't know about brown widows, but I killed a black widow on my porch a few weeks ago. I imagine if they're here, we have many spiders of color around.

I haven't seen a brown widow. I kill a black widow or two every year. Usually under a flower pot, tin, or a bucket.
I hate those frickers!

Sure it’s not a Wolf spider?

They are very common down in Southern Lafourche parish. I have killed many brown widows and many black widows. The brown widow’s venom is less toxic than the black widows venom but it can still cause serious tissue necrosis and infection that can cause a large amount of tissue damage near the bite location.
From what I understand the brown widows were imported on building materials after Hurricane Katrina forced a massive rebuilding effort in the wake of the storm and subsequent flooding. They are native to Florida and it is thought that materials from Florida is how they came to live in South Louisiana.
Edit to add that one way to identify the spider’s web is by looking for egg sacs in the web that have spikes on the sacs. So even if you don’t see the actual spider the presence of spiky egg sacs will show that they are around.
frick spiders in general and the venomous species even more!!!

First year in our new house we must have killed 20 of them. Land had not previously been cleared. Each year the number has dropped and I’ve learned where to check for nest.

I either know you or it’s a total coincidence that a buddy of mine killed 2 of them today too lol

Thankfully they aren't all that dangerous, though. Only about 2000 people are bitten by them per year in the US, and most of them don't even need treatment. And the last death by black widow was decades ago.

I have had a bunch of both brown and black over the years.
