Then why is it such a disgrace to not stand for the anthem? It's representation is not mutually exclusive to the military.

Hasn't been, never was, and never will be. This country extends beyond the military

Personal responsibility has nothing to do with the flag.

When you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes. Just don't turn around and blame others when you don't like the end results of your actions.

It's rather simple. Even a grad assistant can understand that.

You ignore the mechanism of human progress and our country's where we are overall reducing the delta between reality and our country's most noble aims.

That's how you handle the cognitive dissonance. Make measureable progress in reasonable time.

So keep on keeping on

What issues? How did the flag/national anthem hurt you personally?

n a civil society, there must be a social contract between the state and the citizen. Past wrongs that are perpetuated by the state should evolve over time; it's the citizen's responsibility, however, to trust the state's judgment and exercise prudent, discretionary action in response. I see no visible reason for the particular act of civil disobedience by Kaepernick as a prudent response to any judgment by the existing state.

Idealistically, yes. I agree with you.

Let's talk reality though.

That's not happening, and I don't see how anyone with an education can cognitively say so. Disproportionate State violence against black people is as American as the declaration of independence; actually it predates it. That's a fact. If it hurts, sorry but there's nothing you can say to reverse that. But you can willfully ignore that. Which is what many seem to do. Or they just don't care because it's not them.

Why should black Americans trust the state? I'm asking for an honest reason of why they should? Looking st situations like Flint or the lead poisoning in Indiana, or health care disparities, Etc, why should this group has any faith in a govt not built for them, and built originally to exclude them? It was never crafted with them in mind, except as to be a cash cow for their economic system

We have amendments and clauses still in law that were meant to subjugate them. We have prosecutors to this day that still seek juries that were punitively punish and convict black defendants because of racial prejudices.

Explain to me in your opinion why black Americans can and should blindly trust in a system that has, more so than not, not had their best interest in mind? Whether it was repealing slavery then ushering in Jim Crow right after that, or the beginning of the industrial prison complex in the 1870s to round up those freed men, or laws used to punitively restrict their economic advancements. Or the Democratic Party taking black votes for 50 years and giving them nothing but ruined cities and more plight, when has someone actually had their plights in mind, and not their representation to some sort of fiscal or political gain?

Boo hoo. Tell me how how horribly you've been oppressed lately.

You little baby back bitches make me sick. You no NOTHING of true oppression. You live in the lap of luxury and the way some of you act you'd think you were being driven through the streets.

Disgusting

Classic example of a person who studies one topic thoroughly, possibly exhaustively, who therefore has spent relatively less time considering other disciplines, and yet considers himself smarter (read wiser) than everyone else on any other topic.

The flag and the national anthem are symbols. They represent our ideals as a nation. Ideals that are lofty yet worthy of admiration and worthy of the sacrifices made to attain and maintain them. Ideals such as freedom, equality under the law, a nation whose government is supposed to be of the people and for the people - all people of this country.

It is right and good to debate the what's and how's of such a nation. It is right and good to criticize our people or our government and seek change.

And I realize that disaffected people will sometimes act/react in countercultural ways to attract attention. But that doesn't mean that his point is a good one, or that he shouldn't be criticized for his actions by those who see it as a we attempt to throw the good out with the bad and an odd act of self-loathing since the one who is taking the swipe at the the symbols of our nation has been in a unique position to benefit from that same nation and culture, all together represented by those symbols.

Not to mention that the ongoing racist meme is so overly emphasized beyond any reasonable sense of reality, that it's patently absurd. We should be celebrating the amazing way that our nation continues to defy all of human history and many basic human instincts to be inclusive of all races, sexes, religions and origins. The flag actually represents a unity of different peoples whose commonality and unity is based ideals of freedom and equality.

All of the studying involved in the education of Goyas may have kept him from seeing the big picture, I think.

Good point.

Any wrongs, no matter how old, permanently discredit the institution or symbol. So we need to dissolve the federal government because of the Trail of Tears. No black person should ever vote for a Democrat again because they were the party of slavery and segregation. Abolish the higher education system due to its history of discrimination.

Because the causes of that state are more complicated than saying "it's the state's fault". If you really are a PhD student, you should know about the statistical validity issues when looking at those numbers.

Why should anyone trust the state? African Americans aren't unique in this.

Link to those amendments and clauses?

Like the guy previously said, it's about the delta between reality and ideals over time, and context is everything. How much do you know about the state of the world in the late 18th century when that group of men took a pretty revolutionary step in setting up their system? Or over the course of the last 240 years?

Look, Ph.D candidate, there's not a single nation on this earth that exists or has existed that has done no wrong, and has always lived up to its ideals.

It is the nature of nations, who are in a constant state of competition, to abandon ideals in the pursuit of both power and survival. Just as individuals fail at this, nations fail at this. Everyone knows this.

People who constantly point out the failings of our country are annoying, naive, and hypocritical. Annoying because they point out things that everyone is already aware of. Naive because they assume that great nations can be built without terrible actions. Hypocritical because they preach against a country while enjoying the benefits of that country's many and various crimes against people.

You ask:

quote:

How can those that uplift all that is good with the our flag ignore our shameful moments that didn't reflect our ideals.

I ask:

How can those that reflect on all that is bad with our flag ignore our great accomplishments, when we have stood above all other nations in promoting and defending liberty?

Simply put, you take the good with the bad. Just as the good should never completely obscure the bad (we all make mistakes), the bad should never lead to national self-loathing. The world is a competitive place that will swallow men and nations alike. Hating yourself is an unproductive and dangerous thing when everyone is already aligned against you.
